Volunteering at the University, or in the local community, can improve your careers prospects and help you to feel at home. It’s also a great way of getting a good work-life balance, and helping others can improve your mental and physical health too.
If you want to know more about volunteering as part of improving your career opportunities, you can talk to our Careers and Employability team.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Checks (previously CRB checks) assist organisations such as employers, volunteer involving organisations and licensing bodies, by identifying candidates and/or volunteers that may be unsuitable for certain kinds of work.
This enables these organisations to make more informed recruitment and licensing decisions.
DBS checks are there to protect both you and the organisation.
Detailed further information about DBS checks can be found here.
If you have been asked by an organisation to undertake a DBS check you can contact Salford CVS who are able to conduct Enhanced DBS checks for individuals that have a confirmed placement offer from an organisation.
There will be an admin fee for this and they will charge for the Enhanced DBS check (£44) if it is part of an accredited module and therefore not classed by the DBS as volunteering (for which there is no cost for the DBS itself).
Remember, any organisation that advertises through the University of Salford Opportunities Database must arrange for a DBS check to be conducted and pay for any administrative costs paid if required for the role so it's definitely worth checking there first!
Anyone that has been asked to complete a DBS check for a volunteering role they are arranging themselves should do the following:
- Request an e-mail from the organisation they are undertaking their work experience/volunteering with confirming this and the requirement for a DBS check.
- Forward this to firstname.lastname@example.org
- Salford CVS will contact the host organisation and then process the DBS check for the volunteer on behalf of the organisation.
