Donor Funded Scholarships and Bursaries

Donor-funded scholarships and bursaries are generously funded by our donor community, which consist of our alumni, friends and industry partners. They are designed to alleviate financial pressures of studying at university and help support our students progress, whether that is buying a new laptop or covering a field trip. They also open the door to additional networking, mentoring, support and guidance. Securing a scholarship is not only a non-repayable award for our students, but a moment of recognition and a vote of confidence that we believe in their ability and potential.

Donor-funded Scholarships 2024-25

All donor-funded scholarships are available exclusively to full-time home fee paying students. For more information about additional financial support for your studies, please visit our Fees and Funding page.

Applying is easy with our quick and simple application form under each scholarship. Below, you will find detailed information about the scholarships available to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, including eligibility criteria.

The deadline for applications is Friday, 4 October 2024.

School of Science, Engineering and Environment

The Gittins Family Charitable Trust Scholarships

The Gittins Trust is a charity focused on supporting students in engineering, manufacturing and health work. Salford alumnus, Michael Woodmore is a trustee.

There are three scholarships available for Level 4 (Year 1), undergraduate students completing an engineering degree in one of the following courses:

Hg Access to Tech Scholarships

Hg Access to tech scholarships are generously funded through Hg Capital. Hg is a leading investor in European and transatlantic software and services businesses. Nic Humphries, a Salford alumnus, is the Senior Partner and Executive Chairman.

There are three scholarships available to all Level 4 (Year 1) undergraduate students studying a STEM course.

Landsec Scholarships

Landsec is a real estate and investment trust company. They work with communities and local authorities across the UK to revitalise urban spaces into dynamic areas for living, working and recreation. Their sustainable, long-term projects create lasting value, growth and jobs.

Temporary Works Forum (TWf) Scholarships

The Temporary Works Forum (TWf) is a UK-based organisation that focuses on promoting best practices and sharing knowledge related to temporary works in the construction industry. Temporary works refer to the short-term structures or arrangements necessary to support construction, such as scaffolding, shoring, or formwork. These are critical for the safety and success of construction projects but are often overlooked.

There are five scholarships available to all Level 5 (Year 2) undergraduate students studying one of the following courses:

Gamma Scholarships

Gamma Telecoms is a UK-based telecommunications company that provides a wide range of communication services. Founded in 2001, Gamma Telecoms has become a leading provider in the UK, especially for businesses.

There are two scholarships available to all Level 4 (Year 1) undergraduate students studying one of the following courses:

Gerry Mason Engineering Scholarships

The Gerry Mason Engineering Scholarship is kindly funded by Morson Group, in memory of Gerry Mason, founder of the Morson Group. The Morson Group is a UK-based company specialising in engineering recruitment and design services. Founded in 1969, the group has grown to become one of the largest providers of technical staffing solutions in the engineering, IT, and construction sectors. Morson Group operates globally, supplying skilled professionals and workforce solutions to industries such as aerospace, defense, rail, nuclear, infrastructure, and oil & gas.

There are four scholarships available to all Level 4 (Year 1) undergraduate students studying engineering.

Bellway Scholarships

Funded through the Friends of Energy House 2.0, Bellway are offering two brand new scholarships. Bellway is a major UK-based residential property developer, established in 1946. The company primarily focuses on building a wide range of homes, from affordable housing to luxury properties.

There are two scholarships available to all Level 4 (Year 1) undergraduate students studying one of the following courses:

Farrat Scholarship (PG)

The Farrat Scholarship programme has been generously funded by Farrat in partnership with the University of Salford, Energy House Labs. Farrat use their engineering expertise and passion for perfection in controlling vibration and thermal energy in buildings and industrial machinery. The scholarships have been established to commemorate the memory of one of our late PhD students, Joe Pemberton. Joe worked on an iCase between the university and Farrat and was about to start a fulltime role with them.

The Steve Pearce Biochemistry Scholarship

The Steve Pearce Biochemistry Scholarship is funded by Steve Pearce. He is the Chief Executive and former owner of Omega Ingredients Limited. In 2022 he sold Omega Ingredients to French company Robertet.

IRIS Software Group Scholarships

IRIS Software Group is a UK-based software company that develops integrated software solutions for businesses in the accountancy, payroll, HR and education sectors. They are an award winning software and solutions for the businesses of the future. Their software is designed to help organisations make better business decisions by reducing administration, streamlining processes, and generating data insights.

There are two scholarships available to a Level 5 (Year 2) undergraduate student studying one of the following courses:

Decipher - A DeSimone Company Scholarship

Decipher, A DeSimone company, is a specialised technology-driven consulting firm known for its advanced risk management and loss assessment services, particularly in the construction, insurance and forensic engineering industries. Decipher focuses on providing innovative solutions through data-driven risk assessments, forensic investigations and expert analysis. Its services are typically aimed at reducing risk, ensuring compliance, and improving outcomes for large-scale construction and engineering projects.

There is one scholarship available to all Level 4 (Year 1) undergraduate students studying BSc Quantity Surveying.

David Tupman Engineering Scholarship

The David Tupman Scholarship is generously funded by an alumnus of the University and former Vice President of Apple, David Tupman.

There is one scholarship available to a Level 4 (Year 1) undergraduate student studying one of the following courses:

MGF Scholarship (UG)

MGF are a privately owned company whose primary focus is the provision of a comprehensive temporary works solutions service using wholly in-house resources. Recognised as market leaders in the design, manufacture and provision of modular and bespoke excavation support systems, they are committed to providing our customers with complete engineered solutions and promoting current best practice for all types of excavation works.

Al-Habeeb Scholarship

The scholarship is thanks to Mohammed Habeebullah OBE JP, CEO and Trustee of the Al Habeeb Foundation, a charitable trust that provides for the less privileged members of society.

This programme will be delivered in partnership with Bury College, and will be awarded to one student who progresses onto one of the below Level 5 programmes at the University, once they successfully complete the HNC in Applied Sciences or the HNC in Digital Technologies at the College.

The Aziz Foundation is a UK-based charitable organisation focused on supporting British Muslim communities. Founded by Asif Aziz, a British businessman and philanthropist, the foundation aims to improve access to education, leadership development, and social mobility for British Muslims.

Fraud Lawayers Association Scholarship

The Fraud Lawyers association are offering a brand new scholarship. It is an organisation that was founded in 2012 to bring together lawyers from leading firms and chambers to share knowledge and build professional relationships.

Ann Scully Nursing Scholarship

Ann Scully studied mathematics and computer science at university in the 1980s. During her career, she worked as a Medical Secretary at Hope Hospital. In her memory, Ann has generously donated funds to support a student in nursing.

Who can apply for a scholarship and bursary?

Anyone can apply for a scholarship and bursary as long as they hit the eligibility criteria highlighted under each scholarship and application form.

What is a scholarship and/or bursary?

Our scholarships are cash, not tuition fee scholarships. They are designed to help with the cost of living and to support your studies, e.g., utilities, travel costs, equipment needed etc. Payments are made on a one-off basis or through instalments. A bursary is the same but are a one-off payment only.

How do I apply?

What is the deadline for applying for a Scholarship?

The deadline to apply for 2024-25 is Friday 4 October 2024.

How will I know if I am successful?

A member of the allocation panel will let students know if they are successful with the scholarship application.

What are the terms and conditions?

The terms and conditions are in the section below but also may vary depending on which scholarship or bursary you apply for. Scholarship and bursary terms and conditions are highlighted in the Grant Acceptance that is sent to you upon being awarded the scholarship.

What does it mean by a low income background?

To evidence a low-income background – the student must have provided Student Finance (England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland) with sufficient information to enable a full financial assessment, with consent from the student and their sponsor(s) to share this data with the university. The University of Salford will then use the result of the financial assessment to confirm low-income eligibility.

Terms and conditions

Before applying for a donor-funded scholarship or bursary, all applicants are advised to read our terms and conditions.

Donor-funded scholarships and bursaries are available to applicants who are:
- A UK resident.
- Studying full-time, on-campus for the duration of their programme.
- Studying an eligible undergraduate or postgraduate programme – please refer to the eligibility criteria for each scholarship programme.
Our current scholarships and bursaries are not available to students studying a foundation year, part-time, a degree apprenticeship, distance or blended learning, or where the programme is delivered through a partner institution; however, this is subject to change.
If you have already received a scholarship, you will not be eligible to apply for another.
To accept the award, students must complete a Grant Acceptance form and Student Payment Account form – these will be sent to successful applicants directly.
No award is confirmed until we have verified that you are registered at the University of Salford and engaged with your course – this will be done with Student Records.
All decisions are confidential, and recipients must not share the information via social media or other platforms, such as LinkedIn, until permitted by the Alumni Engagement and Development team.
You can apply for more than one scholarship or bursary, but you are only eligible to receive one award.
- If you are eligible to apply for more than one of the donor-funded scholarships or bursaries, you will have the opportunity to notify us of this towards the end of the application form – please only submit one application form.
The university may cancel any award at any point and seek repayment of any monies already paid by appropriate means if the student is found to have claimed under false information.
If your academic progress is deemed to be unsatisfactory or you no longer meet the eligibility criteria, the university will terminate the scholarship/bursary and you will no longer be eligible for the award in subsequent years. Satisfactory progress is defined as progressing onto the next stage of your programme of study at the first attempt without reassessment.
Awards will not normally be terminated, nor repayment required on the basis of academic failure, but will not be paid during any repeat year or part-year.
If a student completes an industry placement year, they will not receive any funding during that year – payments will continue upon your return to the university.
If a student withdraws from their studies or is required to withdraw, no further payments will be made, and you may be required to repay the grant awarded to you.
The university reserves the right to terminate an award and demand repayment on funds already paid, in case of disciplinary action against an award-holder.
All donor-funded scholarship and bursary recipients must consent to:
- Us using your photo and any written materials or videos you have produced to publicise our scholarships.
- Submitting at least two written or video updates for the donor during every academic year.
- Attending a virtual or in-person ‘meet and greet’ with the donor.
- Participating in additional activities organised by your donor, these may include workshops or industry experience opportunities – any additional obligations will be made clear to each scholarship/bursary recipient before being awarded.
All decisions are final. We are unable to provide feedback on unsuccessful applications.
