Performance and Dance



Our courses are designed to fully equip you for a career in 21st century performance. Running through the core of our Performance programmes is an exploration of the relationship between the live and the recorded. When you study with us, you’ll produce work for the stage, camera and radio, experimenting with a combination of all these.

You can take options from across the school, providing collaborative opportunities to help development towards becoming adaptable and versatile graduates.

The Performance department is staffed by experienced industry practitioners and researchers, many of whom are constantly engaged with professional projects. The result is a vibrant relationship with industry, both in the UK and internationally, enhanced by our relationship with all the key venues around Manchester and, of course, our involvement with MediaCityUK.

This course is taught by a team of academics and industry professionals who are all experts in their field and entrepreneurial in their careers. As a student on BA Dance you will receive technique class/s every day, the course focuses on contemporary technique which is underpinned by ballet, body conditioning and contact improvisation. Every semester you will also experience a different complimentary technique, for example, partner dancing, commercial or a world dance form.

Choreography is at the core of this course, from day one you will be making work and during your time here you will develop your creative skills through classes in both group and solo choreography with the opportunity for your work to be performed at public platforms. Your understanding of the role of a choreographer will be further developed through intensive projects with visiting choreographers; these projects simulate industry expectations, you will be treated as a member of a company creating work in a rigorous creative process that is then performed to the public.

It is the aim of team to wholly inform you of current industry trends so that you have a clear understanding of the diverse world of dance and hence the career opportunities for you when you graduate. You will engage in practical workshops in aerial performance such as silks and static trapeze, experiment with the latest developments in live performance and technology, and also learn the practicalities of using the camera and editing software to facilitate creating interdisciplinary and dance for camera pieces.

The course is delivered in the custom made arts building, New Adelphi. Our studios have professional status and we benefit from a number of artists in residence every year.
