Biography
Laurence Murphy MA, MIET,MBCS
Laurence Murphy is Senior Lecturer in Media Technology and programme leader for the BSc Media Technology Pathway programme at Media city He is an active researcher in Mobile and Internet broadcast systems, High Definition , 4K Ultra HD & 3D Television and Digital cinema. He is currently engaged in PHD research into changing media technologies and their impact on both the Broadcast industries and the viewer. Laurence began his operational career as a location sound recordist in 1985 whilst studying for his 1st degree. After a move into Camera work he progressed into studio and outside broadcast technical management. He is an active camera and engineering consultant for a number of broadcast companies and manufacturers. He began his association with Salford University in 1992. He designed the four camera studios within the school. His academic career began with a BA in Communication Media in 1986, his second degree MA in Television and Documentary he completed in 1999. In September 2000 Laurence became programme leader of the BSc Media Technology programme. In 2007 Laurence designed the first undergraduate technology degree in the UK to focus on the newest areas of Broadcast Media, Mobile and Internet Television. The Programme took its first students in Sep 2008 and is a joint programme between the Schools of Media, Music and Performance and Computing, Science and Engineering at Salford.
He says, "Graduates I have taught are now senior Broadcast engineers, technical directors and systems designers, operational camera and sound operators working across five continents. Our graduates keep in touch and regularly return to talk to our current students. Broadcast industry relevance and a strong teaching team keep the programmes we deliver producing graduates who find work for major broadcast companies in the UK, Europe and Internationally." Laurence was directly involved with the design specification and completion of Salford Universities building and facilities at MediaCityUK, which opened in September 2011. Laurence is a Full active member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology and is the institutes PHD student moderator and link officer at the University of Salford.
Laurence is a full member of a number of professional organisations Principally , The society of Motion Picture Television Engineers, The Institute of Engineering and Technology, The Guild of Television Cameramen, The Royal Television society, and the British Computing Society.
As programme Leader for the BSc Media Technology pathway I lead the teaching of advanced engineering and applied technical operations engineering and system design.
As well as primary module delivery on the BSc Media technology programme I also also teach on our Masters programmes looking at New technologies and their implications on International Journalism, Documentary and features production and on the Children’s television Masters programme documentary and Features production.
I am currently engaged in research into 4K Ultra HD implementation the viability of 8K in the real world and the advent of VR and AR systems in Broadcasting.
My research focuses on the implementation of new technologies and their effects on Industry, manufacturers and users.
