Lecturer in social work

Biography

I started working with young offenders in Belfast, continuing this for 2 years, before moving to Manchester as assistant manager working with street homeless people. I worked in this post for 2 years, whilst at the same time working PT for Manchester Youth service for. I moved to Bolton and managed a young people’s housing scheme for 16-25 year olds for 6 years. From this I worked at an adoption agency supporting birth parents, adoptees and adoptive parents for 2 years in Manchester. I moved back into mental health work and became assistant director at 42nd Street, a young persons mental health charity for 3 years. This included managing 2 CMHT’s, managing a suicide prevention and self-harm team, managing a counselling team and responsible for all men’s work. I then moved to a Local Authority Community Mental Health Team as an ASW/ AMPH for 6 years, 3 years working as senior practitioner in Early Intervention in Psychosis team working with 14-31 year olds.

Teaching

I taught full time, as a lecturer, at Stockport College on the BA social work for 6 years. I have been teaching at University of Salford for last 3 years. During my career, I have been a Practice Educator for 22 years and enjoy this area of work as well. I undertake work in practice each year as this assists me in building my practice currency.

I currently teach on:

  • Introduction to professional social work – L4 includes OSCE (20 credits) Preparing to study social work L4 (20 credit)
  • Co-teach – Developing Critical SW practice L6 (0.5x 20 credit) Leads Mental Health Module
  • Part-time Intro to Professional SW 20 credits

Research Interests

Mental health work and various aspects of restraint within the mental health field
