Dr Ian Podmore

Senior Lecturer in Analytical Bioscience


I joined the University of Salford in 2001 as a lecturer in Analytical Chemistry, having previously been a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the University of Leicester. In 2008, I was promoted to the role of Senior Lecturer.

During the period 2007-2011, I was programme lead for the MSc in Analytical Bioscience & Drug Design and in 2012 I became programme lead for BSc Pharmaceutical Science and BSc Biochemistry; this was extended to include our new BSc Medicinal Chemistry programme which launched in 2014. 


I currently teach at all UG levels on a range of programmes and on the MSc courses in Drug Design & Discovery, Biotechnology and Biomedical Science, covering subjects related to analytical chemistry and analytical bioscience.

I supervise project students on both undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses. In addition, I have supervised and am currently supervising postgraduate research students. 

Research Interests

My current research interests focus upon the development of analytical methods (mainly based upon chromatography and mass spectrometry techniques such as GC-MS, LC-MS and MALDI-TOF) to measure biomarkers of disease, in particular those associated with free radical damage.

In recent studies, we have used MALDI-TOF MS and GC-MS to detect and identify hydroxyl free radicals that have been trapped using nitrone derivatives.
