Senior Lecturer in Environmental Health
I am a Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner, Chartered Environmental Health Practitioner and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I have over 25 years’ experience within the private and public sector and have held or currently hold positions of esteem such as Member of the IOSH Professional Standards Committee; Chair of Manchester Occupational Health & Safety Group; Member of the IOSH Qualifications Working Party, External Academic Expert Panellist for the validation of MSc and BSc programmes in the UK and overseas and external examiner for MSc and BSc programmes.
I am also a Dean of School nominee for dealing with cases of academic misconduct and a member of the Engineering and Environment Industry Collaboration Zone (ICZ) steering group; the School Teaching, Learning and Development and Quality, Standards and Enhancement Committees and the Employability Working Group.
I have led MSc programmes in Safety, Health and Environment Management for 13 years at the University of Salford. These are professionally orientated programmes accredited and recognised by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health. Internationally recognised, these courses involve critical engagement with multi-disciplinary concepts, which are of relevance to the theory and practice.
The modules have been designed to enable development of the intellectual and analytical skills appropriate for professionals in the 21st century. A feature of the courses is applied learning and an emphasis on contextualising study. Visiting professors and expert practitioners providing insight into leading edge practice.
I contribute towards the teaching and delivery of modules and supervision of dissertations on the BSc Environmental Management programme and other programmes across the School where specialist input on Occupational Safety & Health is required.
I am also the license holder on behalf of the University for IOSH accredited training, working with colleagues in HR to deliver courses to those with responsibility for managing aspects of safety across the University.
I have published in the fields of the scholarship of teaching and learning, the enhancement of employability skills and the promotion of well-being.
Research interests particularly relate to hand-arm vibration in an occupational setting and the area of risk perception in contextual settings and public health ecology.
