Juli Parr

Programme Leader BA Interior Design

With over 25 years of experience in professional interior design practice, I have been active in workplace design, hospitality, exhibition, retail and education. The majority of my industry skills were developed at Building Design Partnership (BDP) in Manchester, an international multidisciplinary design practice, where I held the position of senior interior designer. Key projects include Civil Aviation Authority Air Traffic Control Centre, Hampshire; National Power HQ, Harrogate; Christie Building, University of Manchester; Vasco da Gama Shopping Centre, Lisbon and various refurbishment projects at the BBC and Granada Television, Manchester.

I have been teaching since 1989, initially part-time alongside industry practice and at various institutions in the North West including MMU and Stockport College, before moving into education full-time. I have been instrumental in writing and starting up new programmes in interior design with MMU and LJMU and have acted in the role of External Advisor for new interior design programmes at the NDA, validated by Staffordshire University.

My role at Salford is Programme Leader and admissions tutor for the BA(Hons) Interior Design course for which I teach across all levels. I am passionate about interior design and enjoy being part of design education at a time where the influence and potential for design is changing rapidly. Contemporary studio practice is constantly evolving and my teaching methods and resources reflect this. The teaching strategy I adopt promotes autonomy and builds confidence in individuals so that they are able to make decisions for themselves and become critical thinkers. Being a member of Interior Educators enables me to keep abreast of current developments in design education. It also provides a platform to network with academics from over 50 universities to exchange ideas and practice affecting the education of interior design.
