Current positions

Lecturer in Counselling and Psychotherapy

Biography

I trained as a counsellor here at the University of Salford, qualifying in 1996 and joined the team as a lecturer in counselling and psychotherapy in 2001. As well as teaching counselling in community and further education, I also have extensive experience of designing and delivering training to a diverse range of helping professionals, including social care staff, care wardens, registrars, housing officers and audiologists. I am also a counsellor and supervisor of counsellors in private practice.

Current Role and Responsibilities

I am a lecturer, skills tutor and group supervisor on our undergraduate and postgraduate counselling degree programmes and currently hold three module leaderships on the BSc Counselling Studies. I also am personal tutor for our final year BSc students and research supervisor on MSc Counselling Studies.

Teaching

My main teaching embraces the personal and professional development of trainee and novice counsellors from introductory level, to qualification and beyond, focussing on person-centred, process and experiential psychotherapeutic approaches. I am equally challenged and rewarded teaching psychoanalysis and bereavement and loss theories to our first and final year students.

Research Interests

My Masters research was a qualitative, heuristic study of loving feelings in counsellors, the findings of which I have presented at Keele and Nottingham University. I am interested in developing further research into clients’ experience of a similar phenomenon. My principal interest is the metaphysical aspects of psychotherapeutic relationships.
