BIOGRAPHY

Initial Architectural practice with the renowned Architect Sam Scorer lead to an international contract as Interior Design Co-ordinator for Kuala Lumpur International Airport with the Japanese firm Taisei; responsible for the design implementation and project management of Concessions, Foreign Airline Offices and tenant co-ordination of interior fit-out works to all End-User areas.

His teaching practice has developed in scope and remit over the past twelve years and allows the range of industrial experiences to be the foundation to creative and conceptual learning. Paul has been shortlisted for a number of teaching awards over this time and continues to develop his teaching practice through a passion for design and the students who study within, and beyond, the subject.

Previous research activity explored language as a catalyst for reading the interior TMESIS (the separation of the elements of a compound word by the interposition of another) and ECHOPRAXIA (the un-conscious resonance of the body in space) leading to a current PhD Modelling Interiority: situating the model as a site of speculation and imminence.

Current PhD research explores the concept model as action, not artefact; a transformative articulation of event, situation and idea. These models provide a rich ground with which to investigate, map, articulate and trace the reflexive associations formed in their iterative development.

The work attempts to extend the power of the model as an interface for theoretical discourse and mediation through an auto-biographical exploration of the model as praxis and spatial speculation. It is through these model studies and their documentation that the interiority of the model and its praxis can be unveiled and encountered as mechanisms of imminence.

Teaching

Paul is the Programme Director for the BSc (Hons) Interior Architecture programme, an innovative design course exploring the inter-related contexts of space, place and experience with a focus on the detailed material and technical approaches to creative design making. Additionally, Paul also teaches design, construction and technology subjects across a suite of courses within the School of the Built Environment.

Research Interests

Research interests include the relationship between theory, making and language and the experiential mapping of the lived and perceived interior.
