Senior Lecturer (Interactive Media and Social Technologies)

Biography

After studying Linguistics and Phonetics at the University of Manchester and working as an interactive media designer, I joined the University of Salford in 1998 as a researcher in Acoustics and Audio Engineering developing multimedia simulations and computer-aided learning packages. I then moved into pedagogical and HCI research, which led to large-scale evaluations of E-Learning initiatives both within the university and for external clients. I have since led and participated in numerous research projects involving education and digital media (EPSRC, JISC, BBC, FP7, EU Socrates-Minerva and LLL) in capacities ranging from researcher to academic director.

My expertise lies in curriculum innovation and the development of new pedagogies through social and participatory media, particularly with respect to creativity and interdisciplinarity.  I deliver a range of modules in CSE all of which are based on emerging technologies, digital identities and digital literacies – with a particular emphasis on acoustic and audio industries. My research focuses on digital cultures and identities, online communities, social technologies and the interplay between formal and informal learning. I deliver regular guest lectures, seminars and keynotes on digital cultures and educational innovation, both in the UK and overseas. As a multi-disciplinary practitioner, I work across media arts and the sciences, developing partnerships and creative approaches to learning and collaboration. I’m an executive board member of the Digital Cluster – a centre of excellence which combines and leads on high quality research, enterprise and teaching in the areas of informatics, digital media,
