Current positions

Senior Lecturer

I have worked in industry (Rolls Royce, Logica) on projects for the Ministry of Defence and the European Space Agency. I have also worked as a freelance independent, working on programming projects for UK Trading Standards, and on security management projects for Technology Appraisals.

Within the University sector, I have worked as a contract researcher at UCL and Salford on projects on X.500/LDAP/SMTP security and public key infrastructures.

I teach modules that take a low-level view about how computer technology works (hardware, networks, operating systems) as I feel these are essential in helping a graduate adapt to whatever new technology will come along in the future. I also teach Linux using the command line (which is how most system administrators use it) and aspects of information security.

I also teach students about higher education learning skills, to make sure they can get good value out of the time and money they are investing by coming to university.

Research Interests

My research interests are in the area of education, specifically looking at how people use technology while learning. I use cultural theories and qualitative/interpretative methods to try to look for unintended side-effects of the ubiquitous use of technology.
