Choosing the UK for postgraduate study

"There were several reasons why I chose to pursue a master’s abroad, but the main one was to gain international experience. The UK, in particular, has a strong genomics sector, and this is the area I wanted to work in so I decided that this would be the best place to study.

I was attracted to the University of Salford’s MSc Biotechnology because of its detailed course curriculum. The course included a range of modules such as molecular biology, proteomics and cell biology which has really prepared me for the work I am doing now. Salford also has fantastic facilities including the state-of-the-art Bodmer Laboratories which I was really keen to work in."

My Salford journey

"As soon as I started the module on genomics and its impact on health, I knew that I had definitely found the path I wanted to follow. My lecturers were so passionate and knowledgeable which made me fall in love with the subject even more.

Throughout my course, the academic staff motivated and supported me. They helped me to channel my strengths and build upon my weaknesses. The University provides you with the right environment, necessary learning platforms and tools to achieve your best.

During my time at Salford, I served as the Secretary for the Master’s Society. In this role, I organised seminars, book clubs, and workshops plus inspired fellow students to contribute to the Salford community.

I also received help from the Careers and Enterprise team. I attended their sessions on acing job applications and writing a great CV which were invaluable in my job search. I truly believe that this coupled with the support of my lecturers helped me to find a job after graduating.

Alongside my studies, I worked part-time as a Safety Steward. This experience helped me to integrate smoothly into UK corporate culture. I also further developed my soft skills in communication, time management and organisation."

Since graduation

"The career path I have found myself on is one I dreamed about. At the end of my master’s, I immediately found a job as a Laboratory Demonstrator at the University, assisting academics and students during laboratory sessions in the Bodmer Labs.

After this, I joined 4basebio (a synthetic DNA manufacturing biotechnology company based in Cambridge) as an MSAT Laboratory Technician working in a team which provides high-quality DNA constructs for vaccines, gene and cell therapy. During my time here, I won the award for best staff member.

After six months at 4basebio, I then found a job as a Genetic Technologist at North Bristol NHS Trust. Within this role, I have joined other clinical scientists to provide diagnostic care to patients with genetic diseases. I am thrilled with this role as it allows me to apply my experience and skills to improve patient outcomes."
