Professor Sue McAndrew

Professor of mental health and young people

Biography

A Professor in Mental Health and an active researcher, Sue has worked in mental health nursing since 1972. Becoming a lecturer in 1992 at the University of Leeds, she continued to work 1 day per week in primary MH care. In 2009 Sue became a Research Fellow [MH] at UoS, being promoted to Reader in 2014. Sue has published extensively and co-edited 3 books. Research interests include service users & carers; CSA, self harm & suicide; therapeutic engagement and preparation for MH nursing. Sue is associate editor - International Journal of Mental Health Nursing and chairs the PGR Ethics Panel.

Teaching

Chair of PGR Ethics Panel - across 2 Schools; Health & Society and Health Sciences - associated teaching University wide and across both Schools. Supervision of PhD and Masters Students.

Research Interests

Research projects include; self harm among young people, FGM, Young Carers/service users, developing a tool to measure therapeutic engagement from staff and service user perspectives (national project), evaluation of Mind's counselling service, Building resilience in families involved with the criminal justice system and evaluation of Start in Salford's support groups for people with mental health problems. Other outputs include: 43 peer reviewed papers published in high quality journals, 3 edited books, 16 chapters, 81 oral presentations at national and international conferences and 2 poster presentations at international conferences.
