Frequently Asked Questions

What happens on the day of my ceremony?

Register for your ceremony at the Lady Hale building

Pick up your tickets from the ticket desk in the Lady Hale building.

Collect your robes from the Gilbert Rooms which are situated behind Maxwell Hall.

Visit Tempest Photography stand at Lower Maxwell Hall to have your pictures taken.

Make your way to Maxwell Hall 45 minutes prior to your ceremony.

How do I book to attend the ceremony?

Registration is now closed. Please read the ‘How do I defer?’ FAQ for further information.

How do I defer?

Graduates must formally defer their invitation to a future graduation event via the registration link or via this form by 16 December. Any graduates who contact the Graduation Team after the deadline will not be able to request to attend the next available Graduation but may request to attend a future one, if this is in a two year period.

How many guests can I bring?

All graduates that register to attend a ceremony may request up to 2 complimentary guest tickets. Any child over the age of 2 must be included in your allocated tickets. Children up to the age of 2 may sit on an adult’s lap and will require a free ‘Child Under 2’ ticket which you can add to the access requirements notes on the Registration booking pages or alternatively by contacting the Graduation Office on

Guest tickets will not be posted in advance, you will be able to collect tickets on the day from the Ticket Desk once you have completed Registration.

In addition to my complimentary guest tickets, can I purchase more?

We have reviewed the guest capacity available, unfortunately we are unable to release any additional* guest tickets for the ceremonies at this stage. We’re really sorry for any disappointment this may cause.

All graduation ceremonies are live streamed via YouTube and also at Peel Hall, Peel Building on campus. Please do bring additional guests along with you on your special day to support and celebrate with you, they will be able to watch the live stream of the ceremonies in Peel Hall If they do not have tickets for the theatre. This is free of charge and no booking is required. Once the ceremony closes, they can re-join you outside Maxwell Hall for photos and any further celebrations you may have planned.

Occasionally we have additional tickets available on the day however, this is not guaranteed. If tickets are available, they will be sold on a first come, first served basis, priced at £12.50 each. Please ask at the Ticket Desk on the day if there are any available when you collect your complimentary guest tickets.

*Please note all complimentary guest tickets requested are accounted for, this is about additional guest tickets.

Is my place automatically reserved?

Places for graduation are not automatically reserved and registration is now closed. Please read the ‘How do I defer?’ FAQ for further information.

Can we take small children into Maxwell Hall?

Children are welcome at the ceremonies, however the event can prove to be too long for younger children who may become restless. For the comfort of other guests, guardians may be asked to take any child that becomes agitated or distressed out of Maxwell Wall and into the reception area.

Health and Safety regulations determine that all participants and guests at the ceremonies are to be seated, therefore Children over 2 years of age must have their own seat and must be included in your complimentary ticket allocation (max 2).

Children up to the age of 2 may sit on an adult’s lap but will require a free ‘Child Under 2’ ticket.

Alternatively, there will be a nursery available for children aged 3 months to 5 years old, supervised by fully trained staff. Please note that Busy Bees nursery is in the Jack Goldberg Building on the Frederick Road Campus and you will need to make arrangements with the Busy Bees Nursery Manager regarding sessions and availability of places. There will be a charge for this service and places are limited. Please allow sufficient time to drop your child off prior to the ceremony. Contact details for the nursery are: Busy Bees at the University of Salford Statham Street Salford, M6 6PU.

Please note: you must be at Registration at least two hours before your ceremony time.

Children under the age of 16 are not allowed into Maxwell Hall without being accompanied by an adult.

Will there be gowns and photos at the ceremonies?

Yes, all ceremonies will be traditional and will include gowning and photography. On the day, once you have registered, you will then go and collect your gown and depending on the time, head to the photography studios that are situation in Lower Maxwell Hall before or after your ceremony.

You will need to hire your academic gown, which you book directly through Ede & Ravenscroft.

The University has appointed Tempest Photography as its official graduation photography service. For the ultimate memento of your special day, visit Tempest Photography’s studios for individual and family portraiture (and with no obligation to purchase). The studios will be open throughout the day and you don't need to pre-book. In the interests of planning your day and to avoid the busiest period (immediately after your ceremony) we highly recommend visiting the studio before your ceremony.

Photographs will be available for purchase in a range of different packs and frame styles to suit all tastes and budgets. You will receive ‘proofs’ immediately after your session, enabling you to choose your preferred images for ordering. You can order on the day from the sales area or at any time thereafter via the Tempest website.

How do I arrange a visa letter for myself or for my overseas guests?

Once you have secured your graduation tickets, you can request a ‘Proof of Study’ letter including Graduation ceremony information from askUS Visas. This can be used for the visa application.

Further information on visas for Graduation can be found on our dedicated visa webpage.

How much does graduation cost?

There is no charge for graduation. The only compulsory cost that you will incur is the hire of the academic gown and this is paid directly to Ede & Ravenscroft.

Official photographs and souvenirs will also be available for purchase on the day.

My guests need overnight accommodation, what is on offer?

You are advised to wear dark trousers or a skirt under your robes and a buttoned shirt or blouse to secure the hood. Graduates must also be wearing the appropriate academic gowns and hoods (If your clothes do not have any buttons to secure the hood, please bring pins with you as they will not be provided).

Can I collect my certificate from the University on the day of my ceremony?
