How do I book to attend the ceremony?

All eligible students will be invited via email to attend the Summer ceremonies in late Spring, which will include full details on how to book and next steps.

How will I be contacted when registration opens?

All 2020 and 2021 graduates who have deferred to Summer 2022 will be contacted via their personal email address. You might want to check and update your personal email address to ensure you receive communications from us. Please follow the link to ‘Update Your Contact Details’.

All 2022 graduates will be contacted via their University email.

Please note, registration is operated on a first come first served basis.

I didn’t request to defer my invitation but I would like to attend the Summer Graduation 2022 ceremonies.

Unfortunately, we are unable to add any additional graduates into our summer ceremonies at this stage. However, we would be delighted for you to join us at a future graduation event, if you are interested in doing so, please complete this form to indicate which future event you are interested in attending.

You must complete this form to receive an invitation from us in the future.

How many guests can I bring?

All graduates that register to attend a ceremony may request up to 2 complimentary guest tickets. Any child over the age of 2 must be included in your allocated tickets. For further information on children at the ceremonies please see below. Additional guest tickets may be available for your ceremony, we will update all graduates registered to attend a ceremony if we are able to do so.

Guest tickets will not be posted in advance, you will be able to collect tickets on the day from the Ticket Desk once you have completed Registration.

Is my place automatically reserved?

All those that are invited need to register to attend in order to secure their place. This will be operated on a first come first served basis to ensure it is fair. Once the ceremony reaches capacity, ceremony bookings will be closed. If you still wish to attend a ceremony, we will then invite you to attend the next set of ceremonies available. For the School of Arts and Media, SEE and SBS this will be in Winter 2022. For School of Health and Society graduates the next set of ceremonies is in Summer 2023.

Why can’t the School of Health and Society graduates attend Winter Graduation 2022?

Statement from the School of Health and Society:

The School of Health & Society have made a decision to only have graduation ceremonies in the summer, due to the weather and the venue of the Lowry theatre. This will enable large classes of students to graduate together in the same ceremony, which isn't possible in Winter due to the capacity of Maxwell Hall and large cohorts within the School. Once you have completed your studies, and had your final award ratified at an assessment board, you are a graduate, you will receive a certificate within 8 weeks of confirmation of your award by an assessment board and the ceremony is a chance to return to celebrate. You can graduate and use your qualifications without the ceremony, but many of you will want to enjoy that very special day with your peers, your friends and family.

If you have any queries regarding this please contact

Can we take small children into the theatre?

Children are welcome at the ceremonies, however the event can prove to be too long for younger children who may become restless. For the comfort of other guests, guardians may be asked to take any child that becomes agitated or distressed out of the theatre to the foyer area.

Health and Safety regulations determine that all participants and guests at the ceremonies are to be seated, therefore Children over 2 years of age must have their own seat in the Theatre and therefore must be included in your complimentary ticket allocation (max 2).

Children up to the age of 2 may sit on an adult’s lap but will require a free ‘Child Under 2’ ticket.

Children under the age of 16 are not allowed into the theatre without being accompanied by an adult.

Alternatively, there will be a nursery available for children aged 3 months to 5 years old, supervised by fully trained staff. Please note that Busy Bees nursery is in the Jack Goldberg Building on the Frederick Road Campus and you will need to make arrangements with the Busy Bees Nursery Manager regarding sessions and availability of places. There will be a charge for this service and places are limited. Please allow sufficient time to drop your child off prior to the ceremony. Contact details for the nursery are: Busy Bees at the University of Salford Statham Street Salford, M6 6PU.

Please note: you must be at Registration at least two hours before your ceremony time.

Will there be gowns and photos at the ceremonies?

Yes, all ceremonies will be traditional and will include gowning and photography. On the day, once you have checked in, you will then go and collect your gown and depending on the time, head to the photography studios before or after your ceremony.

You will need to hire your academic gown, which you book directly through Ede & Ravenscroft.

The University has appointed Tempest Photography as its official graduation photography service. For the ultimate memento of your special day, visit Tempest Photography’s studios for individual and family portraiture (and with no obligation to purchase). The studios will be open throughout the day and you don't need to pre-book. In the interests of planning your day and to avoid the busiest period (immediately after your ceremony) we highly recommend visiting the studio before your ceremony.

Photographs will be available for purchase in a range of different packs and frame styles to suit all tastes and budgets. You will receive ‘proofs’ immediately after your session, enabling you to choose your preferred images for ordering. You can order on the day from the sales area or at any time thereafter via the Tempest website.

How do I arrange a visa letter for myself or for my overseas guests?

Once you have secured your graduation tickets, you can request a ‘Proof of Study’ letter including Graduation ceremony information from askUS Visas. This can be used for the visa application.

Further information on visas for Graduation can be found on our dedicated visa webpage.

How much does graduation cost?

There is no charge for graduation. The only compulsory cost that you will incur is the hire of the academic gown and this is paid directly to Ede & Ravenscroft.

Official photographs and souvenirs will also be available for purchase on the day.

My guests need overnight accommodation, what is on offer?

The University has negotiated special rates with a number of local hotels. Please visit Offers for more information.

I, or a member of my graduation party, have access requirements, what should I do?

We must be notified of access requirements by 17 June.

What should I wear for the ceremony?

The ceremony is a formal occasion, so graduates and guests are asked to dress appropriately. You are advised to wear dark trousers or a skirt under your robes and a buttoned shirt or blouse to secure the hood. Graduates must also be wearing the appropriate academic gowns and hoods (If your clothes do not have any buttons to secure the hood, please bring pins with you as they will not be provided).

Can I collect my certificate from the University on the day of my ceremony?

Congratulations Class of 2022!

Where will I be sat?

Graduates are seated in order of award e.g., PhD, MA, UG and then alphabetically within each programme.

Will I still receive a certificate before attending/if I don't attend a ceremony?

Graduation ceremonies are a celebration of your degree award and not the actual awarding of your degree which happens after your final results. Therefore, you will receive your certificate via post around 6-8 weeks after receiving your final result. The certificates webpage details this further.

What Covid secure measures will be in place?

We encourage all guests to take a Lateral Flow Test the evening prior or the morning of graduation. You do not need to show proof of this on the day. If your test result is positive or you are feeling unwell, please do not attend the event.

Please do not attend the event if you are experiencing symptoms of Covid-19, have been instructed to self-isolate or have received a positive test result.

Please note: All graduates and guests attending graduation are required to adhere to any Covid secure measures in place unless medically exempt. If anyone in attendance does not adhere to the restrictions in place, then they may be asked to leave.
