Frequently asked questions about Graduation and preparing for your ceremony:

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

IS MY PLACE AUTOMATICALLY RESERVED?

All those that are invited need to register to attend in order to secure their place. This will be operated on a first come first served basis to ensure it is fair. Once the ceremony reaches capacity, ceremony bookings will be closed. If you still wish to attend a ceremony, we will then invite you to attend the next set of ceremonies available.

HOW MUCH DOES GRADUATION COST?

There is no charge for graduation. The only compulsory cost that you will incur is the hire of the academic gown and this is paid directly to Ede & Ravenscroft.

Official photographs and souvenirs will also be available for purchase on the day.

HOW DO I BOOK TO ATTEND THE CEREMONY?

You will be invited via email to attend the Winter ceremonies in early October this year which will include full details on how to book and next steps. If you would prefer to attend the Summer 2022 ceremonies, you will need to let us know that you would like to defer your attendance, instructions on how to do so will be included in the winter ceremonies invitation. This will enable us to update your record and ensure that you are invited to the Summer ceremonies.

How will I be contacted when registration opens?

All 2020 and Summer 2021 graduates will be contacted via their personal email address. You might want to check and update your personal email address to ensure you receive communications from us. Please follow the link to ‘Update Your Contact Details’.  All Winter 2021 graduates will be contacted via their University email at the start of October.

Invitations for the Summer 2022 ceremonies will be sent in early Spring next year.

Please note, registration is operated on a first come first served basis.

HOW MANY GUESTS CAN I BRING?

All graduates that register to attend a ceremony may request up to 2 complimentary guest tickets. Any child over the age of 2 must be included in your allocated tickets. For further information on children at the ceremonies please see below. Unfortunately, we will not be able to release any additional tickets for Winter Graduation.

Guest tickets will not be posted in advance, you will be able to collect tickets on the day from the Ticket Desk once you have completed Registration.

WHAT COVID SECURE MEASURES WILL BE IN PLACE?

Your safety is of paramount importance to us, and we are taking measures to ensure that all graduates, guests and staff feel comfortable and safe when attending Graduation. We are following the latest Government guidance in all our event planning as well as University policy. Once we have confirmation of the measures that we will have in place, they will be displayed here and you will also be emailed regarding this prior to your Graduation Day. All graduates and guests attending Graduation are required to adhere to any Covid secure measures in place, unless medically exempt.  Those that do not adhere to the measures in place may be removed from the event.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR FOR THE CEREMONY?

The ceremony is a formal occasion, so graduates and guests are asked to dress appropriately. You are advised to wear dark trousers or a skirt under your robes and a buttoned shirt or blouse to secure the hood. Graduates must also be wearing the appropriate academic gowns and hoods. (If your clothes do not have any buttons to secure the hood, please bring pins with you as they will not be provided.)

MY GUESTS NEED OVERNIGHT ACCOMMODATION. WHAT'S ON OFFER?

The University has negotiated special rates with a number of local hotels. Please visit Offers for more information.

CAN WE TAKE SMALL CHILDREN INTO THE THEATRE?

Children are welcome at the ceremonies, however the event can prove to be too long for younger children who may become restless. For the comfort of other guests, guardians may be asked to take any child that becomes agitated or distressed out of the theatre to the foyer area.

Health and Safety regulations determine that all participants and guests at the ceremonies are to be seated, therefore Children over 2 years of age must have their own seat in the Theatre and therefore must be included in your complimentary ticket allocation. (max 2)

Children up to the age of 2 may sit on an adult’s lap but will require a free ‘Child Under 2’ ticket.

Children under the age of 16 are not allowed into the theatre without being accompanied by an adult.

Alternatively, there will be a nursery available for children aged 3 months to 5 years old, supervised by fully trained staff. Please note that Busy Bees nursery is in the Jack Goldberg Building on the Frederick Road Campus and you will need to make arrangements with the Busy Bees Nursery Manager regarding sessions and availability of places. There will be a charge for this service and places are limited. Please allow sufficient time to drop your child off prior to the ceremony. Contact details for the nursery are: Busy Bees at the University of Salford Statham Street Salford, M6 6PU

Please note: you must be at Registration at least two hours before your ceremony time.

WILL THERE BE GOWNS AND PHOTOS AT THE CEREMONIES?

Yes, all ceremonies will be traditional and will include gowning and photography. On the day, once you have checked in, you will then go and collect your gown and depending on the time, head to the photography studios before or after your ceremony.

You will need to hire your academic gown, which you book directly through Ede & Ravenscroft.

The University has appointed Tempest Photography as its official graduation photography service. For the ultimate memento of your special day, visit Tempest Photography’s studios for individual and family portraiture (and with no obligation to purchase). The studios will be open throughout the day and we encourage you to pre-book. In the interests of planning your day and to avoid the busiest period (immediately after your ceremony) we also highly recommend visiting the studio before your ceremony.

Photographs will be available for purchase in a range of different packs and frame styles to suit all tastes and budgets.  You will receive ‘proofs’ immediately after your session, enabling you to choose your preferred images for ordering.  You can order on the day from the sales area or at any time thereafter via the Tempest website.  www.tempest-graduations.co.uk

Graduates are seated in order of award e.g., PhD, MA, UG and then alphabetically within each programme.

WILL I STILL RECEIVE MY CERTIFICATE BEFORE ATTENDING/IF I DON'T ATTEND A CEREMONY?

Therefore, you will receive your certificate via post around 6-8 weeks after receiving your final result. For more information on certificates, please see here.
