Gown hire

Graduates at the University of Salford must wear a specific gown, hood, and cap based on their qualification level to participate in the ceremony.

You are required to wear a specific cap, hood and gown during graduation (we’ll refer to all these items as a ‘gown’ from now on). This is an important part of the ceremony – you won’t be allowed to cross the stage without a gown. The gown you’re required to wear for graduation is dependent on the level of qualification you have achieved – you can see a guide below.

You can either hire your gown for the day of your ceremony (this is what most graduates do) or purchase it. Undergraduate and postgraduate gowns cost £42 to hire, and PhD gowns cost £45 to hire. Please note, gowns hired after the deadline will incur a late fee.

  • Hiring a gown: You will collect this on the day of your graduation ceremony after you have checked in.
  • Purchasing a gown: If you decide to purchase a gown to keep, please collect your gown at the allocated time on the day of your ceremony. 

Ordering your gown

You can hire your gown directly through our partners, Graduation Attire.

Simply follow the below link, provide your student ID number and surname, and your gown details should appear for you. The deadline for booking your robes in advance is the 14th November 2025. After this date you will incur an additional charge.

Gown: red Cambridge doctors shape gown with red satin facings and sleeve linings. The facings have a 1” dark teal border on the outer edge. Hood: CNAA simple shape hood in red, lined red Salford jacquard weave, the outer edge of the cape is bordered 1” dark teal. Hat: black bonnet with red cord & tassel.
