Careers Fairs

Find out which employers will be attending the fair so that you can plan who you’d like to speak to. A list of employers will be available beforehand on the fair web page.

If you don’t recognise some employers, take time to find out who they are. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) often offer excellent opportunities, as well as the big names.

Note down the employers you’re interested in finding out more about.

Research companies using their website, LinkedIn, and social media platforms. Look for:

• Current vacancies or early‑career opportunities
• Which pathways the employer offers e.g. graduate schemes, internships 
• What does the company do?
• What products, services, or sectors do they operate in?
• What is their mission, values or company culture like?

Researching the company beforehand helps you avoid asking questions that may create a negative impression to the employer. Questions such as “What does your company do?” or “Do you offer graduate jobs?” can suggest a lack of preparation.

Instead, ask:

• What experience do you look for in applicants?
• What does a typical day look like?
• What is your recruitment process?
• What skills and qualities are important?

Do also prepare your own questions that help you to make a strong application and show genuine interest in the company.

It’s a good idea to have an up-to-date CV ready to hand to employers at the careers fair or to send shortly afterwards.

For some people, careers fairs can feel overwhelming for a variety of reasons. Our careers fairs are often busiest at the start of the event and tend to become quieter towards the end of the event. Therefore, attending later might suit some people better.

Please be aware that some employers may begin packing up as the event quietens down. It’s important to prioritise which employers you’d most like to speak to.

A careers fair is your opportunity to make a strong first impression.

• Wear smart/casual clothing that looks professional
• Demonstrate professional behaviour (no headphones, avoid eating while speaking)
• Bring a phone or notebook to jot down key information or contacts
• Practice asking questions with less familiar employers if nervous
• Try attending alone to maximise your opportunities

• Complete application forms carefully and thoroughly. Don’t rush applications during the event
• Follow up on any leads from the fair by sending a short, professional email 
• Connect with relevant employers or representatives on LinkedIn, including a brief personalised message
• Review the information you collected and identify employers you’d like to explore further
