Business school support

Safa Mirza, a Business Management with Law student here at Salford Business School, shares her appreciation for the SPA team and the support offered to her.

I wanted to say a massive thank you for all the help, support and guidance I received during the most crucial year of my degree! I can't explain how much your help meant to me. I was in a position where I was not sure where my mental health was heading - I was already suffering with anxiety and depression and you helped me out in so many ways that I can't even explain!!

You supported me and guided me so much that I now have completed my BSc degree in Business Management & Law! I'm over the moon!

I graduated in a pandemic, without being on campus and getting the full learning online! I am super proud of myself because I finally did it.

I just wanted to say to those students who ever feel like they are going through a rough patch, or need any sort of guidance/ support - make sure you go directly to the SPA team within the campus as they will help make you feel 100% again!

Whilst resitting my second year, I was dealing with some personal issues and struggled with my mental health. However, with the support of my family, friends and university tutors, I turned this around. I can honestly say that without the support and guidance the tutors gave me, I don't think I could have secured my degree!

Safa is hoping to secure a place on a Postgraduate Law programme. We wish her every luck in the future!

Support your wellbeing

We all have mental health in the same way that we all have physical health, it is part of us and we cannot ignore it or take it for granted. Like our physical health, we need to be aware of when we it deteriorates and try to keep it in prime condition. Like physical health, if we let it deteriorate it can lead to a range of problems that can affect our life significantly.

Mental health difficulties can be heightened through a lack of established support (friends and family). Students already living with a mental health difficulty can experience difficulties trying to adapt to a new environment and routine.

At the University of Salford we encourage students to talk to us regarding any mental health difficulties in order to enable us to offer the best support we can. Students are entitled to support which will help them to access their course on an equal level to their peers.

All students and staff have access to free counselling or sessions at the university. Counselling is a talking therapy that takes place in a safe, trusting non-judgemental environment. Everything that occurs within a counselling session, except in the most exceptional of circumstances, is kept confidential and information is not shared unless you give us permission or it is in your best interests that we do so.

Students looking for support can also contact our Wellbeing Service. This differs to counselling in that our Wellbeing Advisors have a good knowledge of mental health but are not in a position to diagnose mental health conditions. The advantage of seeing a Wellbeing Advisor is that you can discuss any personal issue and they will offer you a space to explore them, support you in looking at your options and help you to take any next steps.

Launch Success...

The panel taking questions at the launch event

Meet Azeem Amir

Azeem Amir, Salford Business School student, is one of many young entrepreneurs who has taken part in in the Salford Business School Launch Scheme. Recently students have been awarded the Santander CEO Fund that was made available to the emerging businesses who have taken part in the scheme.

I would like to say a huge thank you to Santander for the funding I was awarded earlier in the year to help towards my new startup business idea. Not only did the funding make it easier for me financially, but it also meant I was able to access the amazing work the Salford University Launch Incubator provide in assisting aspiring entrepreneurs like myself.

The funding and the Launch Incubator have allowed me to develop an idea that I was passionate about, into a fully registered trading business with an industry business plan, legal structure, market strategy and cost budget analysis. The Salford Business School staff and kick-starter business growth hub programme have given me both the tools and the guidance needed to develop my idea.

My startup is called Learn with ESS and it is an initiative that uses ESS (Education, Sport and Speaking) based activities to provide a unique and interactive team cohesion experience whilst addressing stigmatized issues surrounding disability. Learn with ESS aims to change individual perceptions within society - to reshape towards a more unified future for our current learners.

Meet Adina Nelu

Adina Nelu, Salford Business School alumnus, took part in the Launch business incubator whilst studying with us. Two years on, she was awarded the Santander CEO Fund that was made available to the emerging businesses who have taken part in the scheme.

Here's what she had to say...

My name is Adina Nelu, I’m a Romanian composer based in Manchester, and I specialise in writing music for films and media. I’ve recently become self-employed and started my own business with the support of the Launch business incubator at Salford University, where I graduated my Master’s Degree in 2018.

Earlier this year, I was awarded with the Santander CEO Fund that was made available to the emerging businesses taking part in the Launch programme. I actually applied for it during my first day of social distancing – the first of many to come. Gradually, I found out that I wasn’t eligible for the Government financial support for the Self Employed or any of the schemes designed to support the music industry, due to not having been trading for long enough. This made me feel out of place and left out in a country that had previously welcomed me and made me feel so safe. Finding out that I was one of the three recipients of the award was especially motivating at the time because it showed me that my work was being appreciated and it was worth supporting after all. Above all, receiving this award made a huge difference in the impact that the pandemic had on my well-being – an outcome that was impossible to guess at the time of my application.

That is why I would like to thank Santander for the support they’ve shown at such a critical time both historically and in my career.

Finance and money matters

The cost of university can be a major concern for applicants and their supporters, but the most important thing to note is that there are no upfront costs for tuition fees, and any repayments will be linked to the graduate’s salary once they reach a certain threshold for payment. You’ll find some really helpful information on our Money Matters pages including budgeting and living costs advice. The Student Room and Money Saving Expert also have some great resources for students and their supporters.

All full-time undergraduate degree courses at the University of Salford cost £9,250 per year* for September 2019 or January 2020 entry. Any courses with a foundation year as the first year of study may have a reduced tuition fee for the duration of the foundation year of study. Course fees can be found on our course finder pages for each particular programme of study.

* Please note, our fees are reviewed on an annual basis and may be subject to change.

Student loans

Tuition fee loans are provided by the Student Loans Company and applications are made to Student Finance England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland as appropriate. We would encourage applicants to apply for their student finance as soon as possible to ensure their finances are in place for the new academic year.
