Biography
I have been a professional actor, writer and director for 40 years working with many leading writers and directors including: MIKE LEIGH, ALAN BLEASEDALE (twice), KEN RUSSELL, MICHAEL WEARING and PHILIP SAVILLE. I have appeared in a large number of television drama and comedy productions playing a variety of major roles. These include leading parts in HEARTBEAT, LAST OF THE SUMMER WINE, THE BILL, CORONATION ST (twice!), EMMERDALE, BOY WHO WON THE POOLS, Mike Leigh's HOME SWEET HOME, BOYS FROM THE BLACKSTUFF and THE HISTORY MAN series with Tony Sher. I have written many plays for BBC Radio 4 and for television.
I was awarded a PhD in 2014 Title: 'Media Practice and New approaches to mise-en-scene and auteur theory in Broadcast Radio’ based on my broadcast BBC Radio 4 comedy-drama productions.
I formed alternative comedy troupe 20th Century Coyote (with Rik Mayall) at Manchester University 1975-78. See published article: 'The Roots of alternative comedy? - The alternative story of 20th Century Coyote and Eighties Comedy' in journal Comedy Studies Volume 4 Number 1 (Intellect publishing) and TV documentaries including 'Rik Mayall - Lord of Misrule' (BBC)
I was awarded an Honorary Senior Lectureship in October 2018 and I continue to conduct research and supervise PhD students.
Scriptwriting, Producing, TV, Radio and Stage acting and directing. Film production. PhD supervision.
My current research interests centre round practice-as research projects that focus on political performance, adaptation theory, comedy studies, radio drama and non-naturalistic stage, recorded media and screen performance.
My research interests include:
Film, Television and Radio Production, Performance and Scriptwriting; Expressionist and non-naturalistic performance and production; Comedy performance and writing.
