Studying in the UK
“One of the main reasons I was initially attracted to the UK is because there is no language barrier for me as I am from Nigeria therefore, I felt that it would be an easier transition to my master’s study. Master’s courses in the UK are only one year long which is a lot shorter than other countries, so this was another contributing factor. Finally, the UK has a welcoming and safe culture plus a world-renowned research infrastructure.
When it came to picking my institution, Salford really stood out to me. I heard that Salford was known for its outstanding education and after carefully researching the course, I understood that the modules were robust and up-to-date. The campus is also very diverse and has a welcoming culture.”
MSc Biotechnology at Salford
“My lecturers were supportive throughout the course. They promptly replied to my emails and were always ready to assist with whatever I needed.
During the course, I learnt exciting scientific and technical skills which I now employ in my current role. These include DNA/RNA extraction, cell culturing, gene cloning, agarose gel electrophoresis to name a few. As part of my master’s the University sponsored myself and some of my classmates to attend the Genomic Festival Conference which was a fantastic learning and networking experience.
Alongside our subject-specific skills, the course also developed our soft skills including presentation skills. I believe that it was only through the course helping me improve my presenting abilities that I managed to pass my second job interview for my current role.
Outside of the classroom, I found the support from Salford’s askUS team to be invaluable. I missed two classes to travel home due to a family emergency and a member of the askUS team contacted me. They were checking in to make sure I was okay, and we were on the call for around an hour.”
Journey since graduating
“Once I handed in my dissertation, the University offered me a part-time job as a Demonstrator. This enabled me to jump-start my career and helped me to develop my confidence, effective communication and teamwork. This role resulted in several transferable skills which helped me to secure a full-time graduate role as a Cell and Molecular Scientist working for Advanced Instruments LLC. I am currently focusing on the development of cell lines and assay-based imaging technologies.”
My advice
“Research your course of interest carefully. Choose a university that provides support (hint: you can always tell from their Instagram page). Thoroughly understand the quality of their curriculum. Live in the moment. Choose your peers carefully. Dream big!”
