Professor Garry Crawford

Professor of Sociology


Garry Crawford is a Professor of Cultural Sociology at the University of Salford. Garry's research and teaching focuses primarily on audiences, consumers, digital media/technologies, fans, sport, and gamers. He is the author of numerous books including, Video Gamers (2012) and Consuming Sport (2004), and the co-author of Introducing Cultural Studies (3rd ed. 2017), and The Sage Dictionary of Leisure Studies (2009). Garry is Director of the University of Salford Digital Cluster, editor of the BSA website Discover Sociology, and reviews editor for Cultural Sociology.


Garry currently teaches on the following modules:

  • Work: Practice & Reflection

Research Interests

Garry's research focuses on understanding consumers, audiences and technology-users’ experiences. In recent years Garry has worked collaboratively with numerous industrial and cultural partners, including, amongst others, the London Symphony Orchestra, Imperial War Museums, BBC Academy, Salford City Council, Purple Wifi, and CultureLabel.
