Advance your personal growth as an educator so that you can deliver excellent health and social care now and in the future, applying advances in educational approaches and delivery. This course is aimed at all health and social care professionals who want to develop the knowledge, skills, qualities, and behaviours to be effective leaders in health and social care education. It allows you to explore a range of teaching and learning approaches and to apply evidence-based principles and theories of education in health and social care.

The full course runs full-time or part-time, giving you the chance to exit with the following awards:

Full-time:

  • Postgraduate Diploma: four modules over eight months
  • Master's: four modules plus a dissertation over one year

Part-time:

  • Postgraduate Diploma: four modules over two years
  • Master's: four modules plus a dissertation over three years

You will:

Course details

All about the course

The MSc Education for Health and Social Care Professionals adopts a multiprofessional approach. Modules focus on education, leadership, and service development. The MSc runs full-time over one year or part-time over three years.

Trimester 1

Critically Exploring Professional Practice

This module explores the characteristics of professions and professional practice at Masters level. You will be enabled to critically analyse professional values and beliefs about care in the global context, driving your development as a leader in professional teaching practice.

Education Principles and Practice

Critically apply the theoretical underpinning to leading classroom-based or academic learning. Lead and facilitate learning within a professional and inter-professional learning and working environment. 

Independent Learning (Optional Module)

This module will enable you to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate your own learning and performance. Emphasis is on ‘learning how to learn.’ This will be achieved through work-based activities which address your needs and interests in the field of health and social care education. With support from tutors, you will negotiate and determine your own aims, objectives, learning outcomes, and assessment criteria for the work-based activity.

Emerging Themes In Education (Optional Module)

This module explores contemporary and emerging perspectives on simulation-based and digital technology in health and social care education. 

Timester 2

Research Methods

This module explores contemporary issues and debates in research. These will cover various research methodologies, methods, ethics, critique, and review of the literature, helping you understand the significance of research to health and social care education, and how to plan a research proposal. 

Independent Learning (Optional Module)

This module will enable you to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate your own learning and performance. Emphasis is on ‘learning how to learn.’ This will be achieved through work-based activities which address your needs and interests in the field of health and social care education. With support from tutors, you will negotiate and determine your own aims, objectives, learning outcomes, and assessment criteria for the work-based activity.

Emerging Themes In Education (Optional Module)

This module explores contemporary and emerging perspectives on simulation-based and digital technology in health and social care education. 

Timester 3

Dissertation

This module enables you to develop a research proposal with clear aims and objectives related to your study. You will undertake critical analysis of existing research and engage in various forms of recognised research to produce a sustained, sophisticated, and logical argument in the form of a written dissertation.

Please note that it may not be possible to deliver the full list of options every year as this will depend on factors such as how many students choose a particular option. Exact modules may also vary in order to keep content current. When accepting your offer of a place to study on this programme, you should be aware that not all optional modules will be running each year. Your tutor will be able to advise you as to the available options on or before the start of the programme. Whilst the University tries to ensure that you are able to undertake your preferred options, it cannot guarantee this.

  • Critically Exploring Professional Practice (30 credits) (Trimester 1): Written essay, 3,000 words (100%)
  • Education Principles and Practice (30 credits) (Trimester 1): 5,000-word portfolio (100%)
  • Research Methods (30 credits) (Trimester 2): 5,000-word assignment (100%)

Optional modules:

  • Independent Learning (30 credits) (Trimester 1 or 2): A critical, analytical, and reflective commentary on learning in the student’s professional context, 4,000 words (100%)
  • Emerging Themes in Education Delivery (30 credits) (Trimester 1 or 2): 30-minute poster presentation (100%)

These are then followed by the dissertation module:

  • Dissertation (60 credits): 15,000-word dissertation (100%)

The School of Health and Society

The School of Health and Society is a forward-thinking, dynamic school with a commitment to lifelong learning and real-world impact.

Our courses are informed by the latest research, and we work closely with organisations from both the public and private sector to ensure our teaching is at the forefront of practice. The University has received approval for a new health building on the Frederick Road campus which will create brand new teaching spaces, including new Podiatry spaces. Construction will begin in late 2024, with completion expected by Autumn 2026. This state-of-the-art facility will serve as a health and wellbeing hub, supporting popular healthcare courses and community services. It will feature sustainable design elements and provide modern clinical facilities to enhance student learning and community engagement. Find out more about our new Health Building.

In time community healthcare clinics will also take place there as partnerships are developed to explore research opportunities and to provide a range of therapeutic sessions.

What about after uni?

Completing an MSc course provides diverse career opportunities in clinical practice, leadership, education, and research. Graduates from this course have pursued roles in education, working as educators training future nurses as well as the existing workforce in universities and clinical settings. Overall, MSc study has given graduates opportunities to make a greater impact in the healthcare industry both nationally and internationally. Past students are working in institutions such as the NHS, the independent, private, and voluntary sectors, universities, and research projects and teams.

In addition, CPD is an essential part of maintaining your professional registration. By undertaking CPD modules and courses, you will be able to demonstrate to employers a commitment to the profession.

This course is suitable for all UK and international health and social care professionals, including allied health professionals, healthcare scientists, nurses, midwives, and doctors who want to develop the knowledge, skills, and qualities to be effective leaders in health and social care education.

Standard entry requirements

Home students

  • Registered health or social care professional
  • Undergraduate health or social care-related degree comparable to 120 credits at level 6 or equivalent

International students

To apply, please ensure you meet the following requirements and submit the necessary documents:

  • English language – IELTS (Academic) 6.5 with no element less than 6.0 in each band
  • Letter of reference
  • Online application form including personal statement
  • Passport copy
  • Registered health or social care professional
  • Undergraduate health or social care degree comparable to 120 credits at level 6 or equivalent

English language requirements

If you are an international student and not from a majority English-speaking country, you will need IELTS 7.0 with no element below 6.5. We also accept a range of other English language qualifications. If you do not have the English language requirements, you could take the Pre-Sessional English course to gain entry onto this degree.

Alternative entry requirements

Salford Alternative Entry Scheme (SAES)

We welcome applications from students who may not have formal/ traditional entry criteria but who have relevant experience or the ability to pursue the course successfully. 

The Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process could help you to make your work and life experience count. The APL process can be used for entry onto courses or to give you exemptions from parts of your course. 

Two forms of APL may be used for entry: the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).
