Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (15 Credits, Level 7)

In a nutshell
TThis module offers a comprehensive foundation in reproductive and sexual health, combining up‑to‑date theoretical knowledge with practical skills. You’ll explore the latest developments in reproductive health and contraception, learn to support informed decision‑making, and gain the confidence to guide individuals in making empowered, evidence‑based choices that promote personal and community well‑being. This module is aimed at registered healthcare professionals who wish to develop their knowledge and competence in contraceptive and sexual health within a community setting.
This course is delivered on campus with face to face teaching across 4 full days. The dates for the next intake in May 2026 are 13th, 15th, 20th and 27th May 2026.
You will:
- Develop the ability to deliver safe, compassionate reproductive and sexual health care, underpinned by rigorous assessment and critical analysis of key theories and strategies
- Learn to assess and manage sexual and reproductive health needs using biopsychosocial, cultural, legal, and ethical frameworks to support informed and shared decision‑making
- Gain the skills to promote inclusive, life‑course‑focused sexual health services for diverse populations, including young people, older adults, individuals with disabilities, people with learning disabilities, and LGBTQ+ communities
All about the course
This module aims to prepare you to safely and competently deliver sexual health care and advice within a community setting. You will consider contemporary issues affecting sexual and reproductive health.
Topics covered will include:
- Anatomy and physiology of the reproductive system
- History taking
- STIs – transmission, prevalence, and treatment
- Contraceptive methods and rationale for use
- Contraceptive and sexual health needs in specific client groups
- Legal and ethical issues in practice

On application, you must also provide evidence of your qualifications and 2 references.

Previous study and experience
You should have an undergraduate degree in a related discipline.
You will be a Registered Nurse, ideally working within a General Practice Nurse role.
Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)
We welcome applications from students who may not have formal/traditional entry criteria but who have relevant experience or the ability to pursue the course successfully.
The Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process could help you to make your work and life experience count. The APL process can be used for entry onto courses or to give you exemptions from parts of your course.
Two forms of APL may be used for entry: the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).
We positively welcome applications from students who may not meet the stated entry criteria but who can demonstrate their ability to successfully pursue a programme of study in higher education. Students who do not have formal entry qualifications are required to sit a written assessment which is designed for this purpose. Support in preparing for the written assessment is available from the University.
