Mark Shelbourn

Reader in BIM & Digital Technologies

Biography

I have re-joined the School after a 15 year journey around a number of United Kingdom Higher Education institutions, including international experience at the University of South Australia in Adelaide.

I am now an Associate Professor in Building Information Modelling (BIM) & Digital Technologies. I have been researching and teaching in the area of BIM, collaborative working and digital technologies for over 10 years. My specific interest are people’s behaviours that enable them to better collaborate as individuals and projects.

I am founding member of the Behaviours4Collaboration group, set up to promote collaborative behaviours across the industry.

I have a PhD in Computer-Aided-Learning in Building Pathology from the University of Salford (Sept 2002). I also studied an MSc in Information Technology in Property and Construction, also from the University of Salford (July 1998). My first degree was an BSc Honours in Building Surveying at Sheffield Hallam University.

I am also an adjunct Senior Research Fellow at the University of South Australia where I continue to support students with their studies, particularly the online postgraduate programmes in Building Surveying & Project Management, PhD supervisions, as well as continuing research interests with former colleagues & industry.

Teaching

Mark is currently teaching on the MSc BIM in Digital Built Environments across the different subjects. He is also responsible for the research methods teaching across the Masters suite in the School.

Research Interests

I am the lead of the Education & Learning in the Built Environment (ELBE) research group within the School. I am interested in improving the learning experience through collaboration and project based learning of all those entering the built environment area.

I am continuing my research in the areas of BIM & collaborative working. Proposal writing, conference & journal publications, academic & industrial collaborations mean that my research is now taking on an international flavour. Areas of interest are specific to the people & behavioural aspects of BIM & collaboration. My work in the Behaviours4Collaboration (B4C) group reflects this.
