Journalism

News desk

There has never been a more interesting or significant time to be a journalist and there is no better place to train for this fascinating career than at the heart of the UK’s most vibrant media hub - at the University of Salford’s journalism department in MediaCityUK.

Journalism is constantly evolving to embrace the opportunities of the digital age but at its core it remains the craft of investigating and telling compelling stories - clearly, accurately, legally and ethically.

Our courses equip you with these fundamental journalistic skills along with a full understanding of how we use technology to gather information and tell stories in an engaging manner to as many people and in as many different ways as possible.

You will be taught by experienced industry professionals and academic experts, with guest speakers from the media world delivering inspiring lectures and masterclasses. Our courses provide a solid grounding and then allow for specialisation - such as in sports, broadcast, magazines, web publishing or mobile journalism.

We place a particular emphasis on practical work for students to develop essential professional skills, whether that’s taking part in news days in our purpose-built newsroom, generating multimedia content for our website, designing newspaper pages or presenting and interviewing in the television studio.

We operate our own TV and radio stations – Quays News and Quays Radio – to give you the chance to hone your skills in a realistic setting and our own website provides a live publishing platform where you can put theory into practice.

Our two BA (Hons) Journalism courses are accredited by the BJTC (Broadcast Journalism Training Council) and all students are given the opportunity to obtain the widely recognised industry qualification of the NCTJ (National Council for the Training of Journalists) Diploma.

Our location at the centre of the multi-million pound MediaCityUK facility places us alongside key media organisations including the BBC and ITV. Our students are ideally placed to take advantage of a wide range of work-experience opportunities and this underpins our excellent record of graduates securing journalism jobs with prestigious broadcasters, newspapers, magazines and online publishers across the country.
