The Salford Experience
What do I need to include in my portfolio?
A portfolio is a collection which will form a representation of the work you have developed throughout your studies (A levels, BTEC, or any other art/design related subject) or in your own time. The portfolio does not need to be architectural, but we like to see an interest or affinity with architecture in your work. You may include a range of your work, from freehand drawing/sketching to 3D work to visual or conceptual ideas.
See our Portfolio Submission Guide >>
How will I be assessed during my course?
You will be assessed using a combination of design projects, essays, design portfolios, exams, case study analysis and precedent studies, so you can truly demonstrate your abilities. Hear from BSc (Hons) Architectural Design and Technology student Ruhi Shah about her experience on the course.
Which facilities will I have access to?
As an Architecture student at Salford, you will learn in the purpose-built design studios in our flagship New Adelphi building. You will also have access to our workshops which house high specification equipment, inlcuding laser cutters and 3D printers. Architectural Design and Technology students are based in our Maxwell building, with specialist design studios, presentation suites and computer suites.
What is the difference between an Architect and an Architectural Engineer?
An architect is trained to focus more on the artistry and design of a building, whilst an Architectural Engineer focuses on the technical and structural side of the build, applying science and technology to the real world in order to enhance our standard of living and quality of life.
What will my timetable in first year look like?
Each week you will spend one full day in the studio as well as having lecture based modules across two days, which are usually four hours. You can also come in everyday and work on your project. We encourage this as you will be working alongside 2nd and 3rd year students and can ask them for advice.
Are the materials that we use to make the models paid for on the course?
We provide card for models with discounted prices on thin plywood for laser cutting. Students are encouraged to be creative with their material choices and many of our best models are made with very cheap materials.
