DipHE Esports Enterprise and Management - Laura Farnworth

What made you want to pursue a programme in this area?

I undertook an esports course at college and was looking for a natural progression from this when I found the programme at Salford. I have always been into gaming, game design and competitive gaming, so it seemed the perfect fit for me to hopefully forge a career out of something I enjoy doing.

Why did you choose to study a Level 5 Institute of Technology programme?

The level 5 programme at Salford has a strong focus on practical learning, which is something that attracted me to the programme. It is really hands-on and encourages learning by doing. I have friends doing other, more academic degrees at Salfor,d which suits them, but the way the esports programme is delivered works so much better for me as it allows me to learn in a practical, solution-focused environment.

How has your programme been so far?

I have really enjoyed my time on the programme so far. It’s been great to be able to pitch ideas to the group about potential game tournaments and talk it through with tutors and the rest of the group. It’s really helpful to hear what others think and bounce ideas off each other and the way the programme is delivered allows for open discussion and collaborative idea creation.

What’s one of the best things about your programme?

One of the best things I have gained from the programme is the opportunity it has given me to develop my confidence. I am someone who isn’t keen on presenting, but with the support and encouragement of the course tutors, I have really built my confidence in this area, pitching ideas to the group and to ‘clients’, which I know will open doors for me, whatever career I choose to go into.

What are your plans following completion of the programme?

Ideally, I would like to stay within esports and potentially look to do something within events management.

What would you say to someone else looking to study the programme?

I’d say go for it! The facilities are fantastic, including the esports lab, which is equipped with a tournament arena and industry-grade broadcasting equipment, and the tutors are highly knowledgeable and approachable and genuinely want you to succeed.
