What facilities will I have access to?
BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering students will have access to our Mechanical Laboratory which is used to understand material behaviour under different loading conditions, and houses various pieces of equipment including a tensile test machine. You will also use the Aerodynamics Laboratory and the Control and Dynamics Laboratory for a variety of experiments.
BEng (Hons) Petroleum and Mechanical Engineering students will also have access to our Mechanical Laboratory as well as our Spray Research Laboratories, Petroleum and Combustion Engineering Laboratory, and Computer Simulation Laboratory where you will have access to high-tech laser equipment, a range of research equipment and the latest software for industry analysis.
As well as our main engineering facilities, all students will have access to our impressive Maker Space and Morson Engine Room facilities. Hear from BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering student Corin about some of these facilities and the equipment he uses both on his course and as part of Salford Racing.
How will I benefit from studying an accredited course?
Each of our courses in Mechanical Engineering are accredited by multiple professional bodies, so you will be educated to the highest of industry standards. These accreditations also mean that by completing the course, you will meet the exemplifying academic benchmark for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status requirement, meaning you can enhance your career prospects through professional registration and institution memberships.
Achieving CEng status has a number of potential benefits for your career, including: improved career prospects and employability, higher earning potential, international recognition of your skill and competence, while also demonstrating a professional attitude at the very start of your career which is valued by employers.
Will the university help me to find work experience and industry placements?
Whilst students are responsible for securing their own work experience and industry placements, our tutors will guide and support you through the process. Industry experience not only enables you to apply your knowledge in real-world situations but allows you to form those vital connections early on in your career. We have links with a range of leading organisations and, where possible, will assist students in securing placements.
What career paths will be open to me when I graduate?
A mechanical engineering degree with Salford provides a fast-track entry to careers in a wide range of engineering roles. You may choose to focus your career in product design, manufacturing, or even the operation and maintenance of complex power stations. Opportunities can be found in many globalised industries, including automotives, aerospace, military and defence, petrochemicals, transport and information technology.
Is there individual support with the subject if I find need it?
Of course. As well as the usual support you would expect from your tutors, we also offer extra help when needed.
If you are struggling with a maths-related problem, you can use our drop-in service called MathScope where you can turn up without an appointment.
