Businesses join forces to change the educational aspirations of young Salfordians

Categories: University Campus

Businesses and individuals from across the North West are coming together to support a new initiative which will improve the educational outcomes for thousands of students across Salford.

Donors have pledged money to develop the new IntoUniversity hub at the Beacon Centre, close to Pendleton.

Morson Group, Rolls-Royce SMR, BNY Mellon, and Cisco (who is also acting as the lead technology partner), are all funding the new centre, alongside a partner and former partner of Hg, while Peninsula will provide pro-bono services to IntoUniversity as a charity. The initiative will work closely with local schools and the Universities of Salford and Manchester to improve educational aspirations for young people in the area.

The centre is the second IntoUniversity centre opened in Greater Manchester and will build on the success of IntoUniversity, Manchester North, which opened in Harpurhey in 2018. This centre is already at capacity so a new location in Salford is very much in need. Once established, it will benefit over 1,000 students, aged 7 – 18, each year.

The centre would not be made possible without its valued donors, which all share values to give students from all backgrounds the best possible start in life. Not only will the centre provide much-needed funding but also important industry support through employee volunteering, workshops, mentoring and office visits.

Four full-time members of staff are being recruited to deliver after-school Academic Support sessions to Primary and Secondary school children, aspiration-building workshops in partnership with local schools and a Mentoring programme with current university students and professionals.

Students will be able to access the centre for Academic Support after school Monday to Thursday during term time, and workshops with partner schools will run during the daytime throughout the week.
