University of Salford Ranked 5th Most Sustainable University in the UK
The University of Salford has achieved a First-Class award in the 2025 People & Planet University League, published by The Guardian.
The University of Salford is proud to announce its achievement of a First-Class award and a top-five position in the 2025 People & Planet University League, ranking 5th out of 149 UK institutions for sustainability.
The People & Planet University League is the UK’s only comprehensive and independent ranking of universities based on environmental and ethical performance. This year, Salford improved from 2024, climbing three places from 8th position, by scoring exceptionally well in Environmental Management, scoring 100%, Sustainability Engagement, scoring 100%, Carbon Management and Reduction, both scoring 90%, and Education for Sustainable Development, scoring 94%.
Strong performances in Carbon Management and Carbon Reduction sections reflect the significant progress made in cutting emissions. Since 2005/06, Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions have decreased by 78% due to a combination of initiatives, including:
- Transitioning to low-carbon energy sources
- Investing in energy-efficient infrastructure and technologies
- Implementing smart building management systems
- Engaging staff and students in energy-saving initiatives
This achievement positions Salford as a sector leader in carbon reduction and supports the ambition to reach net zero by 2038, in line with Greater Manchester’s target.
