Attendees at Aziz Foundation Inclusivity Awards

The Aziz Foundation proudly hosted its inaugural Social Impact Awards on Thursday 13 November at the British Library’s King’s Library Gallery and the University of Salford were pleased to come Runner-Up in the Inclusion category.

This was the first time we’ve participated in the Inclusion Awards, which annually recognise universities that demonstrate excellence in bettering the British Muslim student experience on campus. The Foundation works in partnership with higher education institutions to co-develop inclusive learning environments for Muslim students, and offer a range of scholarships to British Muslim students.

Salford is one of the few universities to have launched its own definition of Islamophobia, co-created last year through collaboration between students and staff - a powerful example of community-led change.

Collaboration between our Faith Centre, Islamic Society (ISOC), the EDI team and the Students Union (SU) has created a rich array of events and engagement available to Muslim students at the University.

Our submission was also strengthened by quotes from some of our staff and students, who explained the impact of working and studying within such an inclusive environment.

Pradeep Passi, Pro Vice Chancellor (Social Justice and Equity) said“At Salford, our commitment to equity and inclusion is not just strategic—it is personal, deeply embedded in our values, and shaped by the lived experiences of our community. With over 20% of our student body identifying as Muslim, we understand the responsibility we hold in ensuring our campus is not only welcoming but actively affirming of all identities.

“Our work to support Muslim inclusion has been in partnership with colleagues and students across the University—within academic schools, professional services, our Students’ Union, our Islamic Society, and beyond.

“We know there is more to do. But I am proud of how far we have come, of the work already underway, and of the determination across our university to make Salford a truly inclusive place for all.”
