Record number of nominations for University of Salford at Educate North Awards 2022

Categories: University Campus

The University of Salford is celebrating after being shortlisted for six awards in five categories at the prestigious Educate North Awards – the most nominations the institution has ever received at the awards to date.

A celebration of excellence and best practice in the education sector in the North of England, the awards attract over 300 education professionals from Further and Higher Education institutions from across the region.

The University has been shortlisted in five categories, with Salford Business School in the running for two awards:

  • Business/Industry Collaboration - University sector

Made in Salford

UOS x Harvey Nichols (Made in Salford) was a venture that took place in 2021 between the luxury retailer and the University’s internationally recognised fashion design course, bringing a capsule collection of graduate outcomes to the retail floor for the first time. Consumers in the area had the opportunity to purchase limited edition pieces, in turn supporting the UK fashion economy and next generation of talent.

  • Business Collaboration and Partnerships Award – University sector

Salford Business School and Peninsula Group

Our strategic partnership with Peninsula Group is based on a strong collaborative approach to creating a pipeline for excellent jobs for graduates in the local region together with the founders’ deep-rooted affection for the Salford area. Peninsula Group has been providing professional services to small businesses across the UK since 1983. This covers employment law, HR and Health and Safety management, insurance & employee wellbeing.

IGNITION

The University is home to IGNITION’s Nature-based Solutions (NBS) Living Laboratory, which has become the centre of much debate and attention from business investors, researchers, green infrastructure (GI) organisations and public alike. The Living Lab offers tangible solutions for climate change to inspire businesses and investors to increase their use of NBS.

  • Community Engagement Award – University sector

Law/SILKS

SILKS (Salford Information and Legal Knowledge Scheme) is a scheme whereby law students from Salford Business School provide free legal advice to those in need, mainly in the areas of family and housing law. Support is provided to the students by fully trained legal professionals from several partner law firms during all consultations.

  • Digital Education and Development Award

University of Salford and SN@P Invigilation Centre

Working alongside other HeCooperative members, the University played a lead role in developing the SN@P Invigilation Centre. This system provides a robust means of assessing students when they are not able to attend face-to-face exams. This includes a screen share so that invigilators can monitor students’ activity on their computers, and a separate video share using the student’s own mobile phone to provide a view of the student sat at their desk.

  • Students’ Union of the Year

University of Salford Students’ Union (USSU)

The University of Salford Students’ Union (USSU) empowers students to confront and overcome barriers to learning. It works in partnership with the University to achieve positive change through various services including a student-run wellbeing service (Rafiki), sports clubs, societies, volunteering, course representation, advice, campaigning, restaurant, coffee shop and bar.

The full shortlist can be found on the Educate North website.

John McCarthy, Associate Chief Operating Officer at the University, said: “I am absolutely delighted that Salford has received so many nominations at this year’s Educate North Awards.

“There is some great work taking place across the whole institution and it’s fantastic to receive this external recognition from such a prestigious organisation like Educate North. These nominations show how we are adding real value to the student experience.

“A big thank you must go to all of the colleagues involved - without your hard work, determination and commitment these nominations wouldn’t have been possible.”

The winners will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony on Thursday 7 April 2022 at The Midland Hotel in Manchester.
