Neurodiversity Employer Handbook launched to support inclusive Health and Social Care Apprenticeships

Categories: School of Health and Society

Nicole Blythe, Programme Lead for the Nursing Associate Apprenticeship at the University of Salford, has launched a new Neurodiversity Employer Handbook to promote inclusive practice across health and social care apprenticeship settings.

Developed over 12 months in collaboration with the University’s Disability and Inclusion Service, employers, EDI leads, and apprentices, the handbook offers clear, practical guidance for supporting neurodivergent learners. It addresses common workplace challenges, outlines reasonable adjustments, provides communication strategies, and introduces tools such as the Practice Reasonable Adjustment Plan.

Nicole was driven to create the resource after hearing repeated concerns from both apprentices and employers about stigma, misunderstanding, and uncertainty. “Inclusion doesn’t happen by accident,” she said. “It requires intention, education, and empathy.”

The handbook features powerful case studies from apprentices who have overcome barriers and thrived with the right support. Former Student Nursing Associate apprentice and case study contributor Gintare Vilemaite expressed pride in being part of the project, describing the finished resource as “efficient, perfect, and shamazing”.

The University of Salford is one of the biggest providers of apprenticeship education in the North-West and has supported more than 3,500 apprentices over nearly a decade providing valuable opportunities for both students and employers. Programmes span various industries providing a talent pipeline for sectors including health, construction, engineering, and public services.

Leonora Appleby, Student Nursing Associate Development Practitioner and Professional Nurse Advocate, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, was one of the employers who consulted on the project. She said: “This is bound to be such an incredibly valuable resource to support learners/employees. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to contribute.”

The resource is now available on the University website ready to be shared with employer partners, helping to build confidence and foster more inclusive practice across Health and Social Care apprenticeships.
