Salford Physiotherapy student receives High Sheriffs' Bravery Award

Caiden James ‘CJ’ Kantor, was working as the Floor Manager at the Spaghetti Tree restaurant in Warlingham, Surrey in 2021, when serious disorder broke out, with people throwing glass bottles, chairs and other objects. CJ stepped into the middle of the violence, managing to restrain the main perpetrators for long enough to get staff and bystanders to safety, despite the danger and objects being hailed towards him.  

The incident was captured on CCTV and later became part of a court case in 2025, during which both the prosecuting barrister and judge formally nominated CJ for the High Sheriffs' Bravery Award due to his heroic actions. 

The High Sheriffs' Bravery Award is given to members of the public who show exceptional courage in dangerous or challenging situations. High Sheriffs across the country present these awards to recognise people who have stepped in to protect others, prevent harm, or assist in the justice process, often putting themselves at considerable risk while doing so, or people who have gone above and beyond to help others in moments of real danger. 

The award was initially created in order to honour and pay tribute to the unsung heroes of the July 2005 bombings in London – most of whom were ordinary members of the public.  

Caiden was made aware of his shortlisting as a finalist in January this year and has since gone on to receive the award as a result of his exceptional bravery. 

Caiden said, “Receiving the High Sheriffs' Bravery Award is an honour I never expected.  

“On the night of the incident, my only focus was protecting the people around me and preventing anyone from getting seriously hurt. 

“I’m grateful to have been recognised, but even more grateful that everyone made it home safely.”
