Documentation and metadata

Your Data Management Plan (DMP) should provide answers to the following questions:

  1. How will documentation and metadata be captured and stored?
  2. How could the documentation/metadata be used by future researchers?

The tables below show considerations you should make when writing your answer, with example answers to help guide your writing.

Question: How will documentation and metadata be captured and stored?

Considerations:

  • What metadata is being made? (e.g. date of creation, version history, author name, file format, number of data, location of data, research method)
  • What documentation will you create that explain your data set? (e.g. a ‘readme’ file)
