ORCID

About ORCID

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is a persistent digital identifier that:

• distinguishes you from every other researcher
• improves connectivity between the systems you use (e.g. publisher submission systems, grant application systems)
• ensures you get credit for your work.

ORCID is a not-for-profit organisation, supported by research funders, universities and publishers across the world. Many publishers and research funders now require an ORCID iD as part of their submission and application processes. Maintaining an updated ORCID will save you time with the submission process.

As well as providing your unique 16 digit identifier, ORCID also has a profile feature. You can populate information about your research activities and create an online CV throughout your entire career. 

You can also link your ORCID iD up with various services so that information about your publications can be automatically added to your profile. This allows you to spend more time on your research. Services include:

• Crossref
• Scopus
• DataCite
• and many more

Create or connect your ORCID via Worktribe

If you have an ORCID iD already, we recommend linking it to your Worktribe profile. If you don't have an ORCID iD, you can create one via Worktribe. To create or connect your ORCID, sign in to Worktribe, click 'Register or Connect your ORCID iD' and follow the instructions. 

Connecting your Worktribe and ORCID profiles enables you to push information about your publications between both accounts. This provides an authenticated link between your ORCID account and the University.

Build your ORCID profile

Once you've created and connected your ORCID, we recommend building your ORCID profile. You could start with your: 

• Visibility preferences 
• Biographical information
• Works

Further instructions are available on the ORCID website. 

ORCID and Research Data

We strongly encourage you to add your published research data outputs to your ORCID record, such as:

• datasets
• code
• supplementary materials.

Doing so increases the visibility and discoverability of your data while ensuring you receive the appropriate credit as its author.

Data outputs can be added to your ORCID record quickly and easily by using the DataCite integration. Alternatively, outputs can be added manually. If your ORCID record is linked to your Worktribe profile, any data outputs you add will be automatically added to the institutional repository for review.

Our institutional Figshare repository also enables you to connect your ORCID record. This means any datasets you publish in Figshare can be automatically pushed to your ORCID profile, helping to streamline research management.
