Beyond MSc Data Science: Nafisah’s story
Nafisah Opeyemi Badmos from Abuja, Nigeria, an MSc Data Science graduate from the University of Salford shares her career experience since graduating.
Why the University of Salford
"The University of Salford stood out to me because of its well-structured and industry-focused course content. The curriculum was designed to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical experience, ensuring that students are well-prepared for their careers after graduation
Salford's strong links with industry, innovative teaching methods, and emphasis on real-world application made it the perfect choice for my academic journey.”
MSc Data Science
“One of the most rewarding aspects of my course was the live project I completed. This experience allowed me to apply the knowledge and skills I had gained in a real-world setting, bridging the gap between theory and practice. Working on a live project not only enhanced my technical and problem-solving abilities but also provided valuable exposure to industry expectations and professional collaboration.
The course also required that I take part in a three-month placement which I completed with the NHS, based in Bury, Greater Manchester. The experience was incredibly valuable. It allowed me to apply my academic knowledge in a real-world healthcare setting. It built my confidence and gave me a deeper understanding of the field.”
Away from the classroom
“I used the Careers and Enterprise team’s support services while I was a student. These resources helped me enhance my CV and improve my presentation skills. The guidance I received through workshops and one-on-one sessions was invaluable in preparing me to pursue professional opportunities.
I was also a part-time student ambassador at Open Days. This was a fantastic experience engaging with prospective students and sharing insights about university life. Attending events not only expanded my knowledge but also strengthened my professional network and friendships.
Surprisingly, some of my best moments at Salford were studying late into the night, surrounded by peers equally driven to succeed.”
Employment after graduation
“I already had a job as a Lecturer in the Department of Cyber Security at the Nigerian Defence Academy, so, I transitioned back into my role after the course.
From there, I transitioned into a data analytics role at a US-based customer support organisation, working remotely while still living in Nigeria.
My next opportunity led me back to the University of Salford, where I worked on a data science KTP (Knowledge Transfer Partnership) project in collaboration with a health data science company, HD Labs. This role brought me to the UK, but unfortunately, the startup lost its funding.
However, this opened the door to my current position as a Lead Data Scientist at a cotton consultancy firm, Macrovesta, where I specialise in cotton market analysis and data-driven insights. Thanks to this role, I was awarded a Global Talent Visa, which has been a significant milestone in my career.”
Tips for prospective international students

The University offers career support, wellbeing services, academic resources, and networking opportunities, use them to your benefit. Placements will give you valuable real-world experience and enhance your employability, take up placement and make effective use of it.”
