The grounds team of Estates and Facilities is responsible for maintaining the grounds and gardens of the university in a prestigious condition, enhancing its image and contributing to the well-being of its staff, students, visitors and the general public.
The team is responsible for the upkeep of the hard and soft landscapes on all the university sites including the main campuses and the sports ground.
Work undertaken by the team includes the mowing and edging of lawns, maintaining shrub beds and borders, clipping hedges, planting and pruning trees and shrubs. In addition, other work includes sweeping paths and gullies, collecting litter and leaves, salting pathways in icy conditions, planting and watering tubs, repairing damage, relaying broken flags and upgrading worn out areas.
The grounds team have worked with the Environmental Sustainability Team to produce a Landscape Management Plan as part of our application for a Green Flag Award for the university and to improve our management of the outside spaces on campus.
We successfully achieved Green Flag Award accreditation in July 2019.
The team are dedicated and proud of the results of their efforts. Various members of the team have been trained in specialist skills including application of pesticides, first aid, use of chainsaws, basic tree climbing and the use of all the machinery they are required to use. The team aspires to work in a friendly, effective and efficient manner, and it is continually seeking to improve its service delivery.
The aim of the team is to enhance the environment for the benefit of all and this involves working throughout the year in all weather conditions. The results, we hope, speak for themselves.
