This module will contribute towards your continuing professional development portfolio, and can also form part of our PgCert Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.
You will:
- the theory and practical application of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
- evaluate the use of CBT in addiction, depression and anxiety disorders
- develop innovative leadership skills

Modules
This module will explore:
- Theories of cognition, behaviour, affective development and learning
- Ethical issues in using CBT with different client groups, e.g. children, vulnerable adults
- Research into the outcomes of CBT as an intervention compared with other approaches
- Utilising CBT with anxiety and depression
- An introduction to working with specific issues e.g. addiction, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, phobias, and trauma.
Please note that exact modules and content offered may vary in order to keep content current and, for courses that offer optional modules, may depend on the number of students selecting particular options. When accepting your offer of a place to study on a programme with optional modules, you should be aware that optional modules may not all run each year. Your tutor will be able to advise you as to the available options on or before the start of the programme. Whilst the University tries to ensure that you can undertake your preferred options, it cannot guarantee this.
Entry requirements
This module is relevant to a range of professionals, including counsellors, psychotherapists and psychological therapists.
Applicants are required to be currently working/volunteering in health care practice either as a counsellor, psychotherapist or in a health and social care related discipline. You will be required to use CBT skills within your work/voluntary placement setting and will need to access a minimum of 20 hours supervised practice.
Standard entry requirements
Previous study and experience
2:1 honours degree in psychology or other health/social care related discipline, e.g. counselling, health sciences, nursing
OR
An honours degree (in any discipline 2.2 or above) and a diploma in counselling or it's UKCP or BPS equivalent.
Alternative entry requirements
Accreditation of prior learning (APL)
We welcome applications from students who may not have formal/traditional entry criteria but who have relevant experience or the ability to pursue the course successfully.
The Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process could help you to make your work and life experience count. The APL process can be used for entry onto courses or to give you exemptions from parts of your course.
Two forms of APL may be used for entry: the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).
