This module will focus on supporting you to develop an appreciation of and ability to navigate and lead the contemporary research ecosystem. You will be supported to build your skills and awareness in meeting contemporary challenges in research leadership and governance.
You will be introduced to a range of external partners and stakeholders to understand their professional expectations, requirements and needs in the undertaking of research. In doing so, you will be exposed to real-world success stories of carrying out commissioned and externally funded research. Through scenario-based work and masterclasses, you will develop skills in responding to research tenders, building protocols to ensure quality assurance, and devise plans for public engagement and impact.
Through a one-day development event, each student will be supported to audit their professional attributes and to create an action plan to further develop the personal skills and professional readiness needed for research-rich working environments.

Are currently in a policy or service delivery role but are looking to step up your career by developing new approaches to applied social research.
Are interested in developing your knowledge and understanding of applied social research methods learning ahead of considering further study.

On completion you will be able to:
- Develop a critical appreciation of the broad professional research landscape.
- Build knowledge, confidence, and skill in meeting funded and commissioned calls for research.
- Develop skills in designing-in impact, engagement, and knowledge exchange for all types of research activity.
- Deepen an appreciation of research governance and its critical role in the research cycle.
- To foster research leadership through exposure to and dialogue with leading experts and partners.
Please note that it may not be possible to deliver the full list of options every year as this will depend on factors such as how many students choose a particular option. Exact modules may also vary in order to keep content current. When accepting your offer of a place to study on this programme, you should be aware that not all optional modules will be running each year. Your tutor will be able to advise you as to the available options on or before the start of the programme. Whilst the University tries to ensure that you are able to undertake your preferred options, it cannot guarantee this.

This module develops your expertise in applied social research methods, with a strong emphasis on conducting research in real-world contexts and driving meaningful impact. It equips you with the knowledge and skills to thrive in a range of sectors—including public, voluntary, and related organisations - by promoting evidence-based practice and informed decision-making to support and/or advance your career.

What you need to know
Previous study and experience
Previous experience of undergraduate study in any subject or significant professional engagement with research activities.
Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)
We positively welcome applications from students who may not meet the stated entry criteria but who can demonstrate their ability to successfully pursue a programme of study in higher education. Students who do not have the traditional entry requirements may be able to apply through the Salford Alternative Entry Scheme. Support in preparing for the written assessment is available from the University.
