Overview

This module will build on and develop new knowledge and skills pertaining to the 'routine newborn examination' and apply this to the changing pattern of health care.  You can take this course as a single module for continuing professional development or as part of BSc (Hons) Midwifery (Level 6) or MSc Midwifery (Level 7).

 

You will:

  • Evaluate the context of examination of the newborn in relation to health promotion
  • Take a holistic approach to the care of the newborn and family
  • Enhance your own practice

How you learn

What will I be doing?

The module lasts up to two semesters in duration and runs in September and February. The first week focuses on administration and reviewing the routine examination of the newborn undertaken by each practitioner. The second week is spent at the University from 10.00am to 4.00pm. Thereafter, the taught weeks involve one morning or afternoon each week.

Assessment: 

  • 20 clinical examinations of the new born – Pass/Fail
  • 30 minute Viva Voce 100%

Future careers

This module is available as stand-alone for the purposes of continuing professional development. You will also be build on and develop new knowledge and skills pertaining to the 'routine newborn examination', and apply this to the changing pattern of health care.

  • Identification and management of congenital abnormalities
  • Clinical examination: recognition of the abnormal

  • Referral systems and local guidelines
  • Holistic approach to the care of the newborn and family
  • Professional, ethical and legal issues

Previous study and experience

To apply for this module you must:

  • Have current professional registration in the UK
  • Be employed in an appropriate clinical setting and have the written consent of your manager to use the clinical area as a learning environment

The Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process could help you to make your work and life experience count. The APL process can be used for entry onto courses or to give you exemptions from parts of your course.

Two forms of APL may be used for entry: the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).
