Brotherton Beans
The food and drink team at the University of Salford have partnered with local coffee supplier, Salford Roasters, to develop our very own unique blend that is exclusive to our campus.
The story behind the name
Following a competition open to staff and students to name our signature brew, the winning name was Brotherton Beans, suggested by Acoustics lecturer and University of Salford alumni Dr Joshua Meggit.
The name pays tribute to Joseph Brotherton, Salford’s first MP and a true trailblazer. His statue stands proudly next to our Peel Park Campus - a reminder of his unwavering commitment to fairness, education reform, workers’ rights, and the abolition of slavery. Though he passed away in 1857, his legacy still resonates with the values we stand for today as a university.
Dr Joshua Meggitt has spent the last 15 years at the University of Salford - first as an undergraduate, then a PhD student, researcher, and now a lecturer.
Sharing how he came up with the name, he said: “I always try to share Salford pride in my lectures – I even kick off my second-year classes with weekly Salford facts. That’s how I came across Joseph Brotherton. When it came time to name the beans, he felt like the perfect tribute.”
