What do I need to do?

Submit an online portfolio OR complete the live brief task.

If you choose to submit a portfolio, these are the requirements

Your work says a lot about you and your motivations. Our guidance is not meant to limit your creative statement but to allow you to demonstrate your creative potential. In general terms however we would expect to see an assortment of the following examples: 

• Sketchbooks, notebooks and development sheets demonstrating the visual development of ideas and concepts (scanned)

• Examples of design/idea development/storyboards/comics which may include animatics, character development, sequential drawing 

• Examples of experience with animation software

• Character, environment, props and puppets traditional and digital

• A range of approaches to observational and life drawing both digital and traditional

• Essays, written reports or blogs etc. demonstrating an interest in narrative, drawing, image making and contemporary animation

We are not only interested in college work, but personal work completed outside of your college course as well. You may have other work that you wish to include that is not listed above so please do send it if you feel it is relevant.  

If you choose to complete the live brief task, these are the requirements

We are aware that many applicants at this stage of the year may not yet have a full portfolio of work to show us. To support you in your application to the course, we have created this short mini project as an alternative to a portfolio.

Using one of following Aesop’s Fables as a prompt

• The Tortoise and The Hare
   
• The Fox and the Grapes
   
• The Boy Who Cried Wolf
   
• The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing

Produce a 12-panel storyboard, that visualises the short fable in full, and a supporting report on how you approached your solution.

Please provide an accompanying report of roughly 500 words – this should be a visual document produced in Microsoft Word,  PowerPoint or similar. Feel free to show examples of planning, research for your idea, character or background designs, and any other idea developments that have aided you in creating the Storyboard and your interpretation of the story and characters.

Tips for the live brief

• Consider the shot framing and composition to enhance the visual storytelling and fit the story into 12 panels
   
• Make sure the reader can distinguish the characters in the story and their actions in each panel
   
• You are encouraged to play with elements and genre of the story
   
• You are open to completing this live brief as a creative solution using resources at hand
   
• Use your imagination and problem solving skills to the best of your abilities to make an effective but recognisable storyboard

We are looking for applicants that are enthusiastic about the subject. At this stage in your education we are much more interested in ideas development, work in progress and drawing skills rather than completed polished projects.  

You will be assessed on your creative potential and ability to contribute towards the animation production cycle.

Portfolio requirements

This year we are looking for applicants to provide us with a an example of your work.  The purpose is for you to tell us more about your experience, skills and interest in the programme you are applying for. In general, we are looking for a creative person with a strong interest and passion for comedy, theatre, media and performance. We would like to see examples of your work which may include:

• One piece of academic writing, which should demonstrate your ability to analyse and evaluate your work or the work of others. This can be something you have produced on your current course. Alternatively, you can write a 300 to 500-word essay on a practitioner of your choice, discussing their key ideas and techniques.

• Two minute monologue, please submit a two-minute monologue. The text may be drawn from any play, film or radio script. This can be from any genre and period you choose.

• Self-Recording – please provide a recording, no more than three minutes long in which you discuss your choice of audition piece, your interest in comedy and performance and your reasons for applying to this course, along with any experience you already have in this area.

The purpose of a portfolio is for you to tell us more about your experience, skills and interest in the course. We are looking to see strong examples of an applicant’s creativity. This can be from: 

• Sketchbooks from previous study of the subject area which show developmental thinking and reasonable interest and ability in traditional drawing skill 

• A small selection of examples of any garments and/or accessories you’ve made

We are looking for applicants to have: 

• Enthusiasm for costume and related subjects e.g. art, literature, performance, theatre, history/conservation  

• Evidence of technical knowledge or design skill: this may be within previous costume/textile art & design projects, work-experience or personal projects undertaken 

If you choose to submit the live brief, these are the requirements

Find two written descriptions of characters from literature and write a short character profile for each. Your character profile should outline any notable features/characteristics e.g. age, gender.

Illustrate the characters using your own interpretation, you can use any drawing medium (Digital, inks, Pro-markers, collage, pencil, charcoal) however, you must use two different mediums.

The task is not about how well you can illustrate, it's about exploring different creative processes.

Some techniques you will enjoy, while others you may not. Experimenting is how you will find your style as a designer.

Portfolio requirements

Your work says a lot about your experience, skills, and interest in the programme. We are looking for a creative person with an aptitude for problem solving and programmatic thinking. The ideal candidate will have good written communication skills with an appreciation for electronics, mathematics, and physics. The creative technologies provide a wide array of development tools which require some degree of technical competencies to master. Most of these tools can be further enhanced with programmatic scripting. It is this creative use of powerful industry tools that separates this course from a purely digital design programme.

You may wish to include examples of work of any of the following: 

• Sketchbooks, notebooks and other material demonstrating visual development of ideas and concepts

• Examples of web development, including design and/or programming (HTML, CSS, Javascript)

• Generative art or creative coding pieces with software such as Processing, OpenFrameworks or TouchDesigner

• Electronics projects integrating Arduino or Raspberry PI

• Games concepts or prototypes produced with any game engine or framework (for example, Roblox, Gamemaker, Unity, Unreal)

• Essays, written reports or blogs evidencing an interest in artificial intelligence, human data interaction, generative art or generally related to creative computing.

What do I need to do?

We would like to see examples of your work which may include:

Solo Performance - The solo performance should be a dance of 2 minutes. You can perform in contemporary, ballet, lyrical or dance fusion (a blend of different dancing styles). It is important to choose appropriate sound accompaniment – you can use text, music, sound effects etc. – or you can perform in silence if preferred. Props should be kept to a minimum and only used if necessary. 

Self-recording - We would also like you to tell us a little about yourself, your hobbies, the place where you live, your school or college, and your job.  If you have experience of working in performance, not just professionally but in any way, tell us about it.  Tell us about which artists, e.g. choreographers, directors, musicians, writers etc. you find inspirational. You don’t have to talk about all of these; just the things you think will be interesting. Then tell us why you want to come to Salford to study and why you want to come on this programme.  For this part of the recording, we suggest that you get whoever is operating the camera to concentrate on your upper body and face (a medium close-up shot)

Online Task

In this task, you are required to write a 400-word written piece about your favourite fashion designer. The purpose of this assignment is to gauge your understanding of a prominent figure in the fashion industry, their historical context, and their impact on the world of fashion. Please take a look at the online task for further details. 

Visual Mood Board

We would like you to provide us with a visual mood board for the autumn winter season for 2023/2024. The images you use should be publicly sourced, for example. magazines, websites, catalogues, and blogs. The mood board can be in any area of the fashion industry (women's, men's, accessories or beauty) and it should include colour inspiration, visuals and text. 

What format does this need to be in? 

We would advise you to save your portfolio as a pdf file, no more than 10mb in size which will be emailed to the tutor.  You may also submit this as an online link to your portfolio using a platform such as issuu.com, but please note you must ensure that the link being sent is not password protected. You can use PowerPoint, or magazines to create this, it is your choice.

We are looking to see strong examples of an applicant's creativity, this could come from a number of sources and disciplines which engage with research, drawing, 3D work and use of materials. We understand some applicants may not have had a fashion specific focus on previous courses so we are happy to see examples from outside of the discipline. In general terms, we would like to see some work that considers how a fashion design mindset could be approached, perhaps through application to the body or clothing. 

If you choose to complete the live brief, these are the requirements

We would like you to pick a specific group of workers from any trade/profession to research (this could be anything from uniforms, sports costumes, historical, contemporary, police officers, refuse collectors, ice skaters, ice cream van drivers). Find research of this group of people from a number of sources, ideally primary (first hand photos perhaps) and secondary (from books/the web). Consider a variety of time periods, countries to help you consider the clothing and garments they wear.

Once you have selected your group of workers to research, then pick a fashion designer to research, think about how this designer approaches fashion. Are they minimal? Maximalist? Bold? Feminine? Conceptual? Show us key images, a short statement (100 words approx.) that discusses their style.

With the information you have gained from your research, sketch, collage, illustrate a range of development and design work that can turn the perhaps mundane workers’ outfits into something fashion-related by considering how that designer might do it if they were basing a collection on the research.

As an example

What would a collection by Yohji Yamamoto using lumberjacks look like? A collection by Off-White using cycle couriers? or if Prabal Gurung did Dive Instructor. The list is endless, have some fun.

• Analytical writing

• Podcasts and/or audio work

• Pre-production work such as storyboards or concept art

• Scripts you have written

We are not only interested in college work, but personal work completed outside of your college course as well. You may have other work that you wish to include that is not listed above so please do send it if you feel it is relevant. We advise though that you go for quality over quantity.

Ideally your content will be web-based and we recommend sending a link of your work rather than trying to transfer files. We're happy to review work on online platforms such as Instagram, ArtStation, DeviantArt, WordPress, Blogger and for moving image YouTube or Vimeo link.  

Ideally you will have two or three pieces of work to submit, showing your skills as a film maker and a diversity in genres. However, if you have one piece of work that shows this then this will be acceptable. As stated above go for quality, show us your best work and this can be work that you have completed outside of college.

The purpose of a portfolio is for you to tell us more about your experience, skills and interest in the course.  

We are looking to see strong examples of an applicant’s creativity this can be from sketchbooks from previous study of the subject area, which show your ability in visual observation and developmental thinking.  

We are looking for applicants to be able to demonstrate: 

• Enthusiasm for the subject and related subjects e.g. art, literature, performance, exhibition design/spatial design or photography

• Evidence of good visual communication skill, previous design/art projects, a work-placement or any independent and more personal projects undertaken

• Knowledge of/ability in relevant technology and practices, CAD/Technical drawing/theatre plans etc. 

• Evidence of working in 3D, this may be model making

• Think of a space you are familiar with, it could be a bedroom, kitchen or a exhibition space in an art gallery – maybe take a few reference photos as a reminder
   
• Either on a computer, or with a pencil and paper, draw a plan of the space you’ve selected: this doesn’t have to be to scale but try to keep sizes in proportion (use a scale rule if you have one, 1:50 or 1:20 scale would probably be most useful)
   
• Looking at your plan and your photos, imagine you are standing in the room, but think of it as a set
   
• From the information you have and using your imagination, try to capture what you see in a ‘visual’. Visuals are used to show what any set you’re building will look like once it’s built – think about what you would want a studio or film camera to see
   
• Go back to the plan you produced, and draw a circle on it representing a camera and put it where it should be in relation to your visual
   
• If you feel inclined, you could make a small card model of the ‘set’ you have designed in white card and take a photo with your phone, imagining your camera is a studio camera – the picture you take will, effectively, represent what a viewer would see on a cinema or on a TV screen. NB: be as imaginative as you like – visuals can be in any medium.

Your work says a lot about you and your motivations. We understand that you may not have completed pieces of work, this is not a problem. We are keen to see pieces of work which show your thought processes, plans, through to final pieces. More importantly we would like to see evidence of aptitude in either creative arts practice or computer science.  

Our guidance is not meant to limit your creative statement but to allow you to demonstrate your creative potential. In general terms however we would expect to an assortment of the following examples:

If your background is in Creative Arts

• Painting, drawing sketching

• Traditional art and design

If your background is in Computer Sciences

Foundation Year

If you have applied for our foundation year we ask for some samples of work to get a better understanding of your artist or technical talent and interests. This doesn't have to be a detailed professional portfolio; all we need to see are some examples of creative or technical work you are currently undertaking or have done in the past. This could be painting, drawing, graphics, photography or even some craft-based work. If you are more of a technical person, maybe you have experimented with some games engines or developed some programs at school or college, maybe you have done some web design. Please try and put together 5 pages that demonstrate your ability to include with your application.

As a rough guide we would expect to see around a dozen pages of work featuring any or a mixture of the above-mentioned themes and media.

Your work says a lot about you and your motivations. We understand that you may not have completed pieces of work, this is not a problem. We are keen to see pieces of work which show your thought processes, plans, through to final pieces. In general, we are looking for the following:  

• A good level of commitment to your studies and evidence of basic art and design skills 

• Research and development, ideas generation and the visual evidence of the process used to develop your outcomes

• Drawing, painting, photography, typography, computer-generated work, mock-ups and photos of any 3D objects and artefacts

• Digital work including video or animation could be embedded or included as a link if it is a large file size

Portfolio requirements

The purpose of a portfolio is for you to tell us more about your experience, skills and interest in the course, allowing us to determine whether this is your best choice. We recognise that you may not have as much work available for a portfolio as you might wish. Please do not worry about this. We are happy to see examples of work and any development of ideas.

Your portfolio can include: 

• Drawings, concepts, technical drawings, observations, models and evidence of working in 3D

• Photography, abstract paintings and graphic design elements can be included but are not as important. Interior Design focuses on human centred design and is technical in nature

Portfolio requirements

This year we are looking for applicants to provide us with an example of your work. The purpose is for you to tell us more about your experience, skills and interest in the programme you are applying for. In general, we are looking for a creative person with a strong interest and passion for comedy, theatre, media and performance. We would like to see examples of your work which may include:

• One piece of academic writing, which should demonstrate your ability to analyse and evaluate your work or the work of others. This can be something you have produced on your current course. Alternatively, you can write a 300 to 500-word essay on a practitioner of your choice, discussing their key ideas and techniques 

• Two minute monologue, please submit a two-minute monologue. The text may be drawn from any published play or radio script. This can be from any genre and period you choose

• Self-Recording – please provide a recording, no more than three minutes long in which you discuss your choice of audition piece, your interest in media and performance and your reasons for applying to this course, along with any experience you already have in this area.

What format does this need to be in? 

• Your academic writing can be provided as a word document to us or a link, if this is available online 

• All visually recorded work should be submitted as an MP4 or windows media file

What am I being assessed on?  

• Your ability to analyse and evaluate performance work in a written format  

• Your acting ability

• Your engagement and understanding of your chosen monologue along with your interest in the course content during the monologue.

Portfolio requirements

Please prepare two or three examples of recording and production work which demonstrate your use of music technology. If possible, this should include: 1) an example of your own creative music production, and 2) a recording you have made of a musician or band. The combined excerpts should not exceed eight minutes long.

Audition pieces (optional)

If you do not have examples of recording and production to show, you have the option of performing audition pieces instead. You should prepare two pieces to perform, which demonstrate your level of playing ability on your chosen instrument (which can include voice).

If you would prefer to show one or two examples of production work and perform one audition piece, this will also be permitted.

Portfolio requirements

Please prepare and submit two contrasting works to perform on your principal instrument. You may draw on repertoire from any genre or style to perform but the works chosen should demonstrate the best of your ability as an instrumental performer or vocalist. You may perform original material if you wish but please make us aware that you are doing this at the beginning of your audition. If you are a multi-instrumentalist then please feel free to provide a short extract on your second instrument alongside this. 

We are reviewing your performance based on your principal instrument. It is expected that you will continue in this line of study should you be successful in your application.

You are welcome to provide us with examples of other musical projects, such as compositions should you wish to, however this is optional.

We are looking for applicants to provide us with a portfolio of your work which reflect the interests you have, that demonstrates your ideas and creativity. Whilst technical expertise is a bonus it is how your portfolio best reflects you as creative person that we are looking for

Portfolio requirements

This year we are looking for applicants to provide us with a portfolio and a storyboard. Your work says a lot about your experiences, skills and interest in the course.

• Portfolio - we are looking for applicants to demonstrate an understanding of the post production process and include a range of examples to demonstrate an appreciation of editing and VFX. This could include edited audio and/or video examples, photographs, drawing etc. to show the design of editing and VFX sequences. 

• Storyboard - please produce a storyboard that outlines an editing sequence that includes the use of VFX shots. 

What format does this need to be in? 

Please prepare images of your work as an optimised PDF or a folder of high-quality jpegs. 

You may also include hyperlinks to your online platforms such as: Instagram, ArtStation, DeviantArt, WordPress, Blogger and for moving image YouTube or Vimeo link.  

As a rough guide we would expect to see an online range of around a dozen pages of work.
