Students enjoying a practical class in our Bodmer Labs

Salford has a long tradition of working with industry. Delivering commercial research projects and consultancy not only keeps the work we do relevant and practical, it also enables us to bring the newest ideas and approaches to help our industry partners. We have specialisms in a wide variety of areas and have worked with a large number of companies over the years, ranging from major multi-nationals to SMEs.

World-class facilities

Energy House

Victorian terrace house in Energy house

Energy House is the only fully climate-controlled research facility of its kind in the world.  This fully-furnished two-bedroom terraced house is packed with an array of sensors that monitor a range of variables in differing weather conditions.

Our multi-disciplinary team has used Energy House to investigate issues such as the performance of specific technologies, including controls and insulation, plus social factors, such as fuel poverty. Our collaborative partners includes major companies such as Saint Gobain, Hitatchi Europe, Danfoss and Knauf Insulation. Alongside our industry partners, we also support Greater Manchester and the Mayor in making the region a beacon of growth, sustainability and quality of life.

THINKlab

Thinklab at Salford

THINKlab provides a sophisticated environment for innovation and envisioning. harnessing advanced platforms for smart city applications, collaborative engineering, serious gaming, interactive learning and training environments, this facility provides the perfect setting for multi-agency engagement.

Award-winning THINKlab helps our industry partners to explore the power of data – how it can be made more accessible and how it can help us shape our future built environment. Data visualisations and modelling help organisations such as Siemens and the Environment Agency to plan ahead using unique tools that can shape and share data in a meaningful way.

Spray and Petroleum Laboratories

Students working in the Bodmer Laboratory

For over 25 years, Salford has collaborated with over 120 multi-national companies on fundamental, applied research, innovation management and enterprise in the field of spray materials. Our petroleum laboratory feature advanced simulation software packages that are used for research and consultancy in petroluem and gas engineering. The facility includes computational packages that are used in industry for the analysis of petroleum and gas scenarios.

In 2014, Salford won in November 2014 the Times Higher Education (THE) Award for “Outstanding Contribution to Innovation and Technology”. New domestic aerosol valve spray using inert gases were developed with a number of granted patents commercialised. The invention helps to reduce the harmful omissions to the environment that are currently produced through conventional butane led domestic aerosol cans.

Maker Space Print Hive

The Maker Space

The Maker Space and the Morson Engine Room have been established with the generous support of the Morson Group, the UK's No.1 technical, aerospace and rail recruiter and a global leader in technical recruitment and engineering excellence. This exceptional partnership made it possible to implement Industry 4.0 technology and STEM programmes and is a test-bed for innovation and optimisation with access to high spec fabrication machines and metrology scanners, staffed by skilled engineers and supported by leading researchers.

Central to the Maker Space is the ‘Print Hive’, which is kitted out with
dedicated 3D printing machines, comprising a range of 11 FFF (fused filament fabrication), Ultimaker S5, 3 and 2+ machines, a Markforged composite printer specialising in carbon fibre, and high resolution SLA resin printer from Formlabs. Other equipment includes laser and vinyl cutters, and several clean working spaces for assembling electronics, building drones and robots, with a dedicated computer suite for 3D design (CAD) classes.
