The University has heavily invested in our facilities to reflect the equipment used in industry, giving you the chance to develop the necessary skills for your career.

From advanced scientific equipment in our cutting-edge Bodmer laboratories to our world-class anechoic chamber nestled within our audio and acoustic laboratories, we enrich our teaching practice for undergraduate, postgraduate and research students with innovation and discovery.

Bodmer Laboratory

Take science further in Bodmer Laboratory. This specialist, purpose-built teaching space ensures that you benefit from the latest technologies to support your learning and remain on the cutting edge of innovation and discovery. 

Featured equipment includes cell culture facilities, FACS, MALDI-TOF, LC and GC mass spectrometry, FTIR and FTNMR spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.

Translational Medicine Laboratory

The Translational Medicine Laboratory is used for biomedical teaching and research. Features include a dedicated teaching space, three cell culture facilities, a state-of-the-art metabolic suite and a genome sequencer.

The laboratory helps to strengthen our existing links with regional hospitals and facilitate development of clinical studies, and widen collaborations with universities, research centres and industry.

Aerodynamics Laboratory

Engineering is in Salford's DNA. Our aerodynamics laboratory features both low speed and supersonic wind tunnels. Typical laboratory experiments aim to determine the aerodynamic properties of an aerofoil section and influence of wing sweep on the lift and drag characteristics of a tapered wing section.



Visualise future scenarios. THINKlab leads research in advanced technology platforms for smart city applications, collaborative engineering, multi-agency collaboration environments, serious game applications, interactive learning and training environments and community spaces.


The Octave Laboratory is a multi-model research platform, display, and capture space. The facility enables researchers to rapidly prototype solutions and research new techniques before deployment in more specialised settings or in industry practice.

Octave is designed to be synergistic with our main acoustics research facilities, THINKlab, and The Egg facility at MediaCityUK, with strong network links between the research clusters.

Anechoic Chamber

Experience one of the quietest spaces in the UK. Due to the absence of reflection form the walls, floor and ceiling, the anechoic chamber acoustically simulates a soundscape similar being high above the ground.

The room's unique features make it an ideal location for testing the response of loudspeakers or microphones because the room doesn’t affect these measurements. It is also great for creating virtual acoustics - generating auralisations of concert halls, city streets and other spaces.

Maker Space

Maker Space Print Hive

Funded by the Salford-based Morson Group, a global leader in technical recruitment and engineering excellence, our unique additive and digital manufacturing hub is made up of The Maker Space and The Morson Engine Room. These spaces help students to acquire real-world engineering skills and hands-on training, to gain the experience sought by employers.

The Maker Space is an open lab for students to explore digital fabrication to support project-based assignments, equipped with 3D printing machines, laser and vinyl cutters, and clean working spaces for assembling electronics, building drones and robots, and a dedicated computer suite for 3D design (CAD).

The Morson Engine Room

The Morson Engine Room is home to heavy duty, industrial grade machinery and equipped with a waterjet cutter, metal additive manufacturing, large format 3D printing, state of the art electron and optical microscopes and reverse engineering metrology instrumentation.

Guided by skilled engineers, students can learn how to use and operate these machines, and build design skills in relation to manufacturing, assembly and inspection.
