DipHE Data Science - Sean O'Maoilenin

What made you want to pursue a programme in this area?

I have a keen interest in data and statistics as well as predictive modelling so this really drew me to the programme in data science. 

Why did you choose to study this Level 5 Institute of Technology programme as opposed to a traditional degree?

The DipHE programme allows me to build the necessary skills I need in Data Science and although I do plan to top-up to a full degree, the level 5 programme gives me the opportunity to decide on the specific subject area for my bachelor’s degree at a later date. It wasn’t necessary for me to decide from the outset exactly the direction I wanted to go in, I can study the DipHE for 2 years and then decide which area my interests lie and which bachelors to pursue.  

What does your programme involve?

We learn different programming languages and systems and the mathematical concepts for application. 

How have you found your programme so far?

I have really enjoyed the programme so far and feel the new modules and concepts are introduced at a good pace so you can cover a lot without feeling overwhelmed. 

What would you say to someone considering studying this programme?

The programme is great for developing your skills in data science and opens so many doors to different careers. Demand for data scientists in the industry is really high so it’s a great opportunity to study for a qualification that is in high demand. 

What would your advice be to someone considering studying this programme?

Go for it! Brush up on some basic probability and statistics beforehand and check that your device can access the programmes. The course is really practical and hands on which is a real plus and helps to consolidate the learning by doing it in real time.
