Designated Safeguarding Officers (DSO)

The university has a number of Designated Safeguarding Officers (DSO's) that work within each of the university's key departments.

This ensures that safeguarding remains a high priority, and colleagues receive support to deal effectively with any safeguarding issues that may arise locally.

Our Designated Safeguarding Officers come from a wide variety of different backgrounds, but all share a passion for ensuring that students can learn and achieve safely, free from abuse, harassment and harm. DSO's are a point of contact for colleagues who have concerns that vulnerable students may be at risk of harm.

All colleagues at the University of Salford receive Safeguarding and Prevent Awareness training, with Designated Safeguarding Officers undertaking in-depth training to enable them to fulfill their roles.

If a student reports that they have been a victim of sexual assault, harassment, bullying, hate crime or another concerning incident, please direct them to report the incident through Report it.

Designated Safeguarding Officers responsibilities:

  • To provide localised safeguarding and Prevent advice and support to the University community.
  • To support relevant colleagues to make a referral to social services and/or police.
  • Closely monitor the welfare of colleagues/students under the age of 18, in conjunction with Student Support where necessary, in accordance with Keeping Children Safe in Education 2018.
  • Liaise with Human Resources to ensure appropriate DBS checks are taking place.

Staff can find more information on the Safeguarding hub, where you will find the names and contact details for your DSO.
