Help and advice for student supporters
We know these last few months have been a period of uncertainty for everyone, and we’ve had a lot of questions about how the pandemic will affect the university experience of our students. We understand you want to support your applicant in making an informed decision about studying with us, so we've produced a downloadable guide to help. We hope this guide covers all the questions you might have about life at Salford and the opportunities available at our institution.
The wellbeing of our students is extremely important, and we have a dedicated student support service in place, known as askUS. The service is centrally based on our campus and supports students with mental health conditions as well as those who might need emotional support during their studies. Our askUS team are also able to help with a range of student queries, including money matters, accommodation, disability and learner support, work and careers, and academic support.

Finance and Money Matters
The cost of university can be a major concern for applicants and their supporters, but the most important thing to note is that there are no upfront costs for tuition fees, and any repayments will be linked to the graduate’s salary once they reach a certain threshold for payment. All full-time, undergraduate degree courses at the University of Salford cost £9,250 per year* for entry in 2020/21 or 2021/22 academic years. If your applicant is studying a Foundation year as their first year of study, this may have a reduced tuition fee. For more information on the fees for each course, please see individual course pages.

Tuition fee loans are provided by the Student Loans Company and applications are made to Student Finance England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland as appropriate. We would encourage applicants to apply for their student finance as soon as possible to ensure their finances are in place for the new academic year.
Please note: from 6 April 2020, the repayment threshold for post-2012 (plan 2) loans will rise from £25,000 to £26,575, as announced by the government in February 2020. For more information, visit the gov.uk website.
Accommodation at Salford
We have some excellent accommodation options at Salford, with our Peel Park Quarter accommodation recently being voted as the second best Halls of Residence in the UK by Student Hut. Our accommodation sites are managed by our partners, Campus Living Villages, who have a great team on-hand supporting our students.
We recognise that on-campus accommodation isn’t for everyone, and some of our students may decide to live in off-campus accommodation. Our University also work with Manchester Student Homes, a free, university-run housing service who run an accredited landlord scheme for students looking for off-campus accommodation.
For students who have decided to commute into University from home, we’ve also introduced commuter hubs on campus. The hubs provide our commuter students with a space to study, socialise, have lunch and relax between classes.
On occasion, students who move into our accommodation make the decision that it’s not for them, and they want to move out. In this instance, students should speak to the askUS team, who can help them with their decision. It’s important to note that when signed, the tenancy is legally binding and for the full academic year. Sometimes it will be possible for a contract to be taken over by another student, but if this is not possible, the student will remain liable.
Communications from us
During the application window, we send a number of communications to our offer holders. Some of these communications include general information, hints and tips or information relating to their offer, while others are practical communications that may require action from the applicant.
We always verify an applicant’s identity before responding to an enquiry about the status of an application. To help us respond quickly, it’s important that, when communicating with us, the applicant informs us of their full name, course of application, UCAS personal ID number and date of birth.
Student ID number
All applicants are issued with a student ID number when they apply to study with us. This is an eight-digit, unique identifier, starting with an ‘@’ sign. It can be found on the initial ‘Thanks for your application’ email, and in the footer of any communications thereafter. We advise applicants to keep this number handy when contacting us, and it will also be needed for accommodation applications.
Prior to results day, applicants should ensure all contact information is up-to-date on UCAS. Often, applicants will use a school email address at the point of application, but find it is no longer accessible when they finish college; in this instance, it is important to update this with a personal email address. We also recommend adding us to any ‘safe senders’ list on email accounts to avoid any important communications ending up in junk folders; most of our emails come from firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com.
If your applicant applied before the UCAS deadline of 15 January 2021, they should have received all responses from their chosen universities by 31 March 2021, and can select their firm and insurance choices (which must have been done by 5 May 2021) on UCAS Track. If your applicant fails to meet the deadline to reply to offers, they will be 'declined by default', which automatically marks offers as unsuccessful.
If you do find that your applicant’s application has been rejected by default, there is a very short period of time (usually around two weeks) in which UCAS will allow for the application to be reinstated. You should call UCAS on 0371 468 0468 as a matter of urgency.
Applicants normally receive their exam and assessment results in July or August, depending on their specific qualifications. We’re aware there have been discussions about the timing of examinations and results in 2021 due to the pandemic and we’ll update this section with more information when we have it.
In addition to lectures, seminars, workshops and practical sessions, there are plenty of extra-curricular activities students can get involved in. With the Students' Union, our students can join a range of student-run societies, from debating to dancing, radio to rambling; there's something to suit all. We also have a large sports centre in the heart of campus, where students can take part in exercise classes, swimming sessions, work out in the gym or enjoy a game of badminton with friends.

When your applicant applies to university, we are unable to provide any information about their application to you as their parent, carer or supporter, without the expressed permission of the applicant. This is in keeping with the Data Protection Act 2018, and all universities operate in the same way. We appreciate that this can be quite a challenging transition, and if your applicant would like you to discuss their application with us, they will need to provide consent to us on firstname.lastname@example.org.
