Biography
Tahmina is the Programme Lead for the Applied Biomedical Science Degree Apprenticeship and a Lecturer in Biomedical Science at the University of Salford. She began her career as a Biomedical Scientist in 2009, specialising in Haematology and Blood Transfusion. Over the years, she has advanced through various leadership roles, including Biomedical Scientist Team Manager, Blood Sciences Training Officer and Pathology Training Coordinator.
In her academic role, Tahmina is passionate about developing the next generation of biomedical scientists, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the workforce. She is committed to strengthening the profession by enhancing training pathways, improving employability and ensuring graduates are well prepared to meet the evolving demands of biomedical science and clinical diagnostics within pathology services.
Beyond her academic and clinical roles, Tahmina is a Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and a Chartered Scientist (CSci), prestigious recognitions that highlight her expertise, leadership and dedication to advancing the profession. She actively contributes to the field as an IBMS Council Member, a verifier and examiner for registration and specialist portfolios and is the Deputy Chair of the IBMS Education and Professional Standards Committee. She is also the IBMS Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Lead and EDI lead for Staff in HANS.
Areas of Research
Tahmina's research interests lie in pedagogy within biomedical science education, with a particular focus on simulation-based learning. She explores how practice-oriented teaching strategies can enhance student engagement, clinical reasoning and skill acquisition. Her work examines the effectiveness of simulation in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and clinical application, preparing students for placement and professional practice. Tahmina is also interested in the role of reflective practice, assessment design and inclusive teaching approaches within healthcare education. She actively engages in research that supports evidence-based curriculum development and aims to contribute to the scholarship of teaching and learning in the biomedical sciences.
A HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist since 2010, Tahmina brings extensive professional and academic expertise to curriculum design, with a strong emphasis on employability, professional standards and inclusive education. She contributes to several clinical specialism modules including Haematology and Transfusion, Medical Biochemistry, Applied Biomedical Science and previously Clinical Immunology. She is also the module lead for apprenticeship specific modules.
Tahmina's teaching practice is underpinned by innovation and collaboration, demonstrated by her leadership in simulation-based learning, interprofessional education (IPE) and technology-enhanced teaching. She has designed and implemented high-impact simulation activities aligned to clinical laboratory practice and HCPC standards that develop students’ confidence, critical thinking and teamwork. These simulations have been embedded across multiple levels of the programme and commended by both the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and NHS employers. She also leads IPE initiatives, bringing together biomedical science and nursing students to improve collaborative healthcare practice.
In partnership with NHS Blood and Transplant, Tahmina is involved in the development of a virtual reality (VR) training app to teach blood grouping and crossmatching, providing students with immersive, real-world laboratory experiences.
Her Portfolio Club, launched in 2022, supports students with IBMS Registration Training Portfolio preparation. This extracurricular initiative has significantly improved placement outcomes and student confidence and has been nationally recognised for its impact on graduate employability.
As Directorate Lead for EDI, she integrates inclusive practices across her roles, ensuring equitable access to professional development opportunities. Her teaching innovations have been widely disseminated through publications, conferences and national webinars, demonstrating her leadership in aligning higher education with workforce needs and sector standards.
