Biography
I’m a digital marketing and content production specialist with 15 years’ experience, and now full time academic and Programme Leader for BA Digital Video Production and Marketing.
During my professional career, I’ve worked at large agencies developing digital content marketing and campaigns for the likes of Nintendo, Lloyds Banking Group, Microsoft, EE and First Great Western, as well as smaller agencies with clients including Aldi and Velux. In more recent years I’ve worked in higher education, running a team of videographers, photographers, and creatives, while working closely with external animation and video production agencies.
This experience has given me a comprehensive view of the industry, covering everything from brand and content marketing to more specific disciplines like PR, social media and SEO, as well as the essential relationships they share. Since 2014, I’ve taught as a guest lecturer ion the Film and Media BA at Manchester Met, providing industry-specific lectures, workshops and mentorship on subjects like social media, digital video marketing, blogging, podcasting and media careers. Having finally made the move over from industry to full time academia, I'm passionate about giving students a ‘real-world’ experience that will help them shape their view of the sector and find a path that’s right for them. It’s a rapidly changing market, but one I feel is ripe with opportunities – and I’m keen to share my enthusiasm and expertise with others looking to take their first steps into it.
Outside of office hours, I’ve been heavily involved with film and film festivals over the years, having learned a great deal from my experiences as a writer and podcaster, as well as festival organiser, programmer, and marketer for Manchester’s Grimmfest. In 2016, I published my first book Adventures in VHS, a love letter to 1980s cult movies and the format that gave me access to them as a young genre fan. The book was supported by a podcast series, which was followed by Beyond the Neon, a more research-focused show dedicated to the dark underbelly of 1980s pop culture. I’ve since retired from film writing and podcasting to focus on teaching but have continued my academic writing through my research in film marketing – bringing together two of my interests in the one space.
